Horsens, April 28: The Indian women's team faced elimination from the 2026 Uber Cup after a defeat against the reigning champions, China, in their final Group A match.
Despite a commendable effort, India succumbed to a 0-5 loss. In a crucial match to secure a quarterfinal spot, former world champion PV Sindhu took to the court first, facing world number 2 Wang Zhi Yi.
Sindhu was in control for a significant part of the third game, even establishing an 18-12 lead in the decider. However, Wang rallied back, scoring seven consecutive points to seize the lead and ultimately clinched the match shortly after.
India's other singles competitors, Isharani Baruah and Devika Sihag, also put up a fight against their highly-rated Chinese rivals but were unable to secure victories.
Isharani was narrowly defeated by former Olympic Champion Chen Yu Fei with scores of 20-22, 13-21, while Devika lost to Xu Wen Jing with a scoreline of 21-19, 17-21, 10-21.
In women's doubles, the duo of Tanisha Crasto and Kavipriya Selvam sparked some hope by winning the first game against Luo Xu Min and Zhang Shu Xian, but ultimately fell short, losing 10-21, 21-12, 21-19.
Earlier in the tournament, India had lost their opening match against Denmark 2-3 but bounced back with a 5-0 victory over Ukraine.
In the previous Thomas & Uber Cup held in Chengdu in 2024, the Indian women's team, which had previously secured bronze medals in 2014 and 2016, was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Japan.
