Strong Start for India in Hockey World Cup

The Indian women's hockey team showcased a commendable effort by securing a 2-2 draw against China's silver medalists from the Paris Olympics, marking a promising start to their Hockey World Cup journey on Sunday.

Considered their most challenging match in Pool D, India took control early on, effectively disrupting China's gameplay. By the end of the first half, India led 2-1.

The match could have had a different outcome had India been awarded a penalty corner in the final quarter. Navneet Kaur, who was in stellar form throughout the game, attempted to break into the opposition's circle in the dying moments, but her efforts were thwarted by the Chinese defense.

Post-match, Indian coach Sjoerd Marijne expressed his frustration regarding the missed penalty corner opportunity, stating, 'I don’t understand why that PC was not given.'

Navneet (8th minute) and Deepika (26th minute) found the net for India, while Zhang Ying converted a penalty stroke in the 14th minute, and Ma Ning equalized for China with a penalty corner goal in the 39th minute.

India's next challenge will be against South Africa on August 18, following England's 4-0 victory over South Africa earlier in the day.

India began the match with aggression; in the second minute, Sunelita Toppo penetrated the circle from the left flank and passed to Deepika, whose deflected shot was saved by Chinese goalkeeper Li Ting.

Shortly after, Lalremsiami entered the circle after receiving a pass from Baljit, earning India a penalty corner.

Deepika was off the field at that moment, so Navneet took the shot but was unable to convert.

Navneet, who was named Player of the World Cup Qualifiers in Hyderabad with four goals, opened the scoring for India in the eighth minute.

After receiving a free hit, Neha passed to Navneet in the circle, who displayed excellent timing and control to score a field goal.

India dominated the first quarter, with Baljit and Lalremsiami performing exceptionally well from both wings, frequently penetrating the Chinese circle.

However, in the last minute of the first quarter, the referee awarded China a penalty stroke, ruling that Shilpi Dabas obstructed Zhang Ying. India challenged the decision, but the TV umpire upheld it, allowing Ying to score the equalizer for China.

Shilpi made a crucial block early in the second quarter, preventing China from taking the lead with a reverse hit from Peng Yang.

The Indian forwards maintained their offensive pressure, resulting in a penalty corner in the 22nd minute. Navneet's initial shot and rebound were both blocked by the Chinese defense, and Lalremsiami sustained an injury during the second attempt.

Deepika restored India's lead with a penalty corner goal in the 24th minute, and China's video referral against the decision was unsuccessful, leaving them trailing 1-2 at halftime.

China came back strong in the third quarter, keeping the Indian defense on high alert with relentless attacks. The aggressive play from India in the first quarter shifted to a more defensive strategy, which China exploited.

Savita, the tournament's most seasoned player, playing her 314th international match, made a remarkable save in the 33rd minute to deny China an equalizer.

Five minutes later, she saved another shot from Peng Yang, but Ma Ning equalized shortly after from a penalty corner.

China was awarded another penalty corner, but Savita's experience shone through as she blocked Zhang Ying's attempt.

In the final quarter, Navneet sent a cross to Lalremsiami inside the circle in the 52nd minute, but she was slow to control the ball. Before she could shoot, Chinese defenders intercepted.

A minute later, China’s Zhou Meirong received a green card, leaving her team with ten players for two minutes, yet India could not take advantage.

China earned two consecutive penalty corners in the 56th minute but failed to score. In the closing moments, Navneet made a final attempt to penetrate the circle, but India could not secure a penalty corner.
