Excitement Builds for the Upcoming ISL Season

The anticipation for the new football season is palpable as the Indian Super League (ISL) is set to commence on October 10.

In the midst of this excitement, John Abraham, the owner of Northeast United FC, has expressed his views on what he considers a pivotal moment for Indian football, suggesting that this season could significantly alter the way the sport is perceived in the country.

During the unveiling of NEUFC's new jersey in collaboration with Reebok in Mumbai, the Bollywood star emphasized his belief that the ISL is entering a transformative phase, one that is being shaped by the clubs themselves.

Abraham is confident that this upcoming season will mark a significant turning point for Indian football, highlighting the increased involvement of franchise owners in steering the league's future.

“This year, football will become the new cricket in India, as club owners are taking charge of the league. Expect a major shift in football dynamics this season, and as an owner, I am eager to witness this change,” he stated.

He further noted, “All ISL owners are united in their desire to elevate football in India. We are working cohesively to ensure its success, and we are optimistic about the future.”

Discussing the hurdles faced as a club owner in the ISL, Abraham remarked, “Competing against multi-billion-dollar corporations as a single owner is challenging, but we take pride in our achievements. We have successfully integrated Northeast into the mainstream with the support of partners like Reebok and various public and private entities, which reflects the growing confidence in the league and the sport.”

Reflecting on his journey with NEUFC, Abraham shared his aspirations for the future. With the Highlanders having won consecutive Durand Cup titles in 2024 and 2025, he is hopeful that they can finally secure their first ISL title this season.

“I often get emotional about my club because of the hard work we’ve put in to remain competitive. We are proud of our identity and are eagerly looking forward to the ISL starting next month, ready to contend for the title,” he expressed.

Abraham also highlighted the broader impact of his club beyond football, stating, “Northeast United FC is more than just a football team; it represents a movement. Despite the region's civil tensions, our club has served as a unifying force.”

He concluded with a message for NEUFC supporters: “We aim to make you proud of this association. Under the capable leadership of my CEO, Mandar, and with my exceptional coach, Juan, and talented players, we aspire to win more cups for you. We’ve done it twice, and we aim to do it again.”

The new season of the Indian Super League is set to kick off on October 10 and will run until May 2027. This season will see a return to the traditional home-and-away format after the previous season was played in a single-leg round-robin format, with each of the 14 clubs competing in 13 matches.
