Indian Golfers Get Financial Boost for International Competitions
Support for Indian Golfers
New Delhi, October 16: Indian golfers aspiring to make their mark globally have received significant support.
The Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) has announced it will cover qualifying school expenses for its top 30 players from the Order of Merit, with a cap of Rs 3 lakh. This initiative aims to eliminate a major financial hurdle that often prevents Indian talent from seizing international opportunities.
This financial assistance extends to qualifying schools for prestigious tours such as the DP World Tour, Japan Golf Tour, and the Asian Tour. Players who successfully qualify will also receive an additional Rs 10 lakh.
For many emerging professionals, the costs associated with competing abroad for a tour card can be prohibitive. This initiative is designed to allow players to concentrate on their performance rather than financial concerns. It is part of a broader strategy to create clearer pathways for Indian golfers on the international stage.
PGTI President Kapil Dev expressed, “We are committed to providing our players with maximum opportunities to compete internationally.”
He also highlighted the importance of a new partnership with DP World, which has made such initiatives feasible. “We are thrilled to have DP World as a partner. Collaborating with a major organization is crucial, and this partnership marks a positive step for Indian golf,” he added.
Amandeep Johl, CEO of PGTI, stated, “The DP World PGTI will cover qualifying school expenses up to Rs 3 lakh for the top 30 players. If they qualify, each will receive Rs 10 lakh. This has been approved, and funds are allocated. Our focus at DP World PGTI has always been on the players.”
He further explained that the traditional pathway from DP World PGTI to the international scene typically went through the Asian Tour. However, recent changes in the golf landscape have disrupted this transition, making it challenging for players to progress to the DP World Tour. With renewed alignment with the Asian Tour, a stronger international pathway is being established. The organization is also planning to host Asian Development Tour events next year, along with more co-sanctioned tournaments that will provide world-ranking points and opportunities for Olympic qualification.
In addition to financial backing, the PGTI is focused on enhancing access to practice facilities, promoting golf in tier-two and tier-three cities through the NexGen Series, and increasing both prize money and the number of tournaments available.
For golfers who dedicate their time to traveling and pursuing their dreams far from home, the PGTI assures them that they are not alone in their journey.
