Challenging Matches Await Indian Players

The BWF World Championships 2026, set to take place at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi from August 17 to 23, presents a challenging draw for India's medal contenders. Notably, Ayush Shetty, who earned a silver medal at the Asian Championships, will face off against Shi Yuqi of China, the defending champion and top seed, in the first round of men's singles.

In addition, former world champion PV Sindhu is scheduled to begin her journey against Sophia Nobel from Ireland, currently ranked 141st in the world. Meanwhile, Lakshya Sen, who secured a bronze medal at the 2022 world championships, will compete against Austria's Collins Valentine Filimon and may encounter Thailand's second seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn in the pre-quarterfinals, as reported by the Badminton Association of India (BAI).

The men's doubles event sees fifth seeds Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty receiving a bye in the first round. They will face the winners of the match between Scotland's Alexander Dunn and Adam Pringle and Thailand's Chaloempon Charoenkitamorn and Worrapol Thongsa-Nga.

This marks India's return as hosts of the BWF World Championships after a 17-year hiatus, with the live draw conducted in the capital on Wednesday. Sanjay Mishra, general secretary of the Badminton Association of India, announced that over ₹20 crore has been invested in upgrading the Indira Gandhi Multipurpose Indoor Stadium for the event, expressing confidence that this championship will elevate the standards of badminton globally.

As India aims for multiple medals on home soil, all eyes will be on PV Sindhu, who has regained her form, recently winning the Japan Open. Sindhu has strategically avoided facing world number one An Se Young of South Korea and defending champion Akane Yamaguchi of Japan until the later rounds. Although they share the same half of the draw, Sindhu is likely to meet China's third seed Wang Zhi Yi in the pre-quarterfinals, with a potential quarterfinal matchup against sixth seed Putri Wardani from Indonesia.

For Satwik and Chirag, their first significant challenge may come from the 12th-seeded Indonesian duo of Raymond Indra and Nikolaus Joaquin, who reached the finals of the Indonesia Open in June.

After the draw ceremony, chief coach Pullela Gopichand remarked that the men's singles category appears highly competitive, with numerous players capable of clinching the title. He noted, "The first-round clash between Shi Yuqi and Ayush Shetty is significant; given Ayush's aggressive style, facing Shi early could be advantageous rather than later in the tournament."

Ayush has faced Shi Yuqi three times previously, losing each match but coming close in earlier encounters.

Among other Indian participants, Unnati Hooda will compete against Myanmar's Thet Htar Thuzar in her opening match, with a potential second-round clash against 13th seed Michelle Li from Canada.

In mixed doubles, the 15th-seeded Indian pair of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto will enjoy a bye in the first round, with their first major test likely in the round of 16 against sixth seeds Guo Xin Wa and Chen Fang Hui from China.

Their compatriots, Rohan Kapoor and G Ruthvika Shivani, will face Canada's Jonathan Lai and Crystal Lai, with top seeds Feng Yan Zhe and Huang Dong Ping from China awaiting them in the second round.

In women's doubles, two-time All England semi-finalists Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly will take on Spain's Paula Lopez and Lucia Rodriguez in their first match, with the 16th seeds from the USA, Lauren Lam and Allison Lee, potentially waiting in the second round.

Debutants Simran Singhi and Kavipriya Selvam will start their campaign against Nikol Carulla and Carmen Jimenez from Spain, and if successful, they will face five-time European champions Gabriela Stoeva and Stefani Stoeva in the next round.

The second Indian men's doubles team, MR Arjun and Hariharan, will also begin their journey against Ireland's Scott Guildea and Paul Reynolds.

While the anticipated match between Ayush and Shi Yuqi stands out in the men's singles first round, Scotland's Kristy Gilmour, the reigning European Champion, will compete against fifth seed Han Yue from China, and former India Open champion Beiwen Zhang will face Wang Zhi Yi in the women's singles opening round.
