Indian Boxers Celebrate CWG Success

New Delhi, August 4: Following their impressive performances at the Commonwealth Games 2026, Indian boxers Ankush Panghal and Narender Berwal are now setting their sights on winning gold at the upcoming Asian Games. The duo brought home a gold and silver medal, respectively, from the event held in Glasgow.

The Indian boxing team achieved its best-ever medal tally at the CWG 2026, securing seven golds and a total of ten medals. Upon their return to India, they were warmly welcomed at the Delhi Airport.

In an interview, Ankush expressed his joy, stating, "I feel fantastic. Your support means everything, and we will continue to strive for more medals for our nation. The moment our National Anthem played was indescribable. My goal now is to clinch gold at the Asian Games."

Ankush earned India's seventh gold in boxing by defeating England's Dimeji Shittu with a score of 4-1 in the men's 80kg final.

Narender, who secured a silver medal, also expressed his determination to excel at the Asian Games in Japan, starting September 14. He noted, "Preparations are going well, and the support from the government has been excellent. This was my first CWG experience, and while I aimed for gold, I will give my best at the Asian Games. The entire team is training hard, and we feel well-supported."

In the men's 90+kg final, Narender faced England's Damar Thomas and lost by unanimous decision, finishing with a silver medal. Despite this setback, his performance contributed to a successful campaign for the Indian boxing team.

Another silver medalist, Jadumani Singh, shared his excitement about the warm reception they received upon returning home, stating, "It feels wonderful to be welcomed like this after competing at such a high level." Jadumani secured his silver after losing to Australia's Jye Dixon in the men's 55kg final.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games were held in a compact format, which resulted in the exclusion of several traditional medal-winning sports for India, including shooting, wrestling, and badminton.

India concluded the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in fourth place on the medals table, amassing a total of 39 medals: 13 gold, 17 silver, and nine bronze. The country has officially begun preparations to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Amdavad, with the Commonwealth Games Flag ceremonially handed over during a spectacular Closing Ceremony that celebrated the conclusion of Glasgow 2026 and looked forward to the historic centenary edition of the Games.
