Nagoya [Japan], September 18: As the Asian Games 2026 approaches, Indian badminton athletes Lakshya Sen and Kidambi Srikanth have shared their optimism regarding their training while recognizing the formidable competition they will encounter in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

The Indian badminton contingent for the upcoming Asian Games consists of 20 players, including Lakshya Sen, HS Prannoy, and former world No. 1 Kidambi Srikanth, all of whom were part of the silver medal-winning men's team at Hangzhou 2023.

The men's squad also includes Ayush Shetty, Tharun Mannepalli, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, Chirag Shetty, Hariharan Amsakarunan, MR Arjun, and Dhruv Kapila.

In the individual categories, Lakshya Sen and Ayush Shetty will compete in men's singles, while Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, along with Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun, will participate in men's doubles. The men's team retains much of the core that secured a bronze medal at the Thomas Cup earlier this year.

Lakshya Sen's Insights

In a recent interview, Lakshya Sen expressed his excitement and readiness for the Asian Games, highlighting its significance as one of Asia's premier tournaments. He acknowledged the pressure stemming from India's previous performances but emphasized the team's commitment to winning each match and striving for medals.

“I’m thrilled about this tournament, and it’s one of the biggest in Asia. Our preparations have been solid, and I’m eager to compete. We have a history of performing well, and while there’s pressure to excel, our focus is on winning matches and representing our country to the best of our abilities,” he stated.

He also mentioned that the team is awaiting the draw and noted the challenges posed by tough opponents, particularly in the team event where consistent performance across all five matches is crucial.

HS Prannoy's Final Asian Games

Meanwhile, HS Prannoy announced that the 2026 Asian Games will mark his final appearance at this continental multi-sport event, aiming for a strong performance with the men's team following their silver medal finish in Hangzhou three years prior. He confirmed that preparations have been progressing well and that the team is targeting gold this time.

“Yes, this is my last Asian Games. I’m quite certain about that,” the veteran player remarked.

In response to Prannoy's announcement, Lakshya praised his experience and mentorship, noting that younger players look up to both Prannoy and Srikanth for guidance.

Kidambi Srikanth's Confidence

Kidambi Srikanth expressed optimism about India's chances of winning a medal in Aichi-Nagoya, commending his teammates' performances over the past year. He believes that if they play to their potential, they can overcome any team.

“I’m really excited to be here. We have a great opportunity to win a medal in the team event. All nine players are performing exceptionally well, and I firmly believe that if we all play to our potential, we can defeat any opponent,” he stated.

He also expressed gratitude towards fans for their support and expectations, assuring them that the team will strive to deliver their best.
