Indian Athletes Shine at Commonwealth Games 2026 with Multiple Medals

New Delhi, July 27: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla expressed his admiration for Indian athletes following their impressive performances at the Commonwealth Games held in Scotland. He highlighted the achievements of Mirabai Chanu, who secured a gold medal, alongside Rishikanta Singh and Raja Muthupandi, who both earned silver medals, and Jhandu Kumar, who brought home a bronze.
Birla commended their hard work and dedication, extending his congratulations to the athletes, their families, and coaches for their contributions to the nation's pride.
During the Monsoon Session, he stated, “I am thrilled to share that Indian athletes have showcased exceptional talent at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland. Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has clinched the gold in the women's 48kg category, while Rishikanta Singh and Raja Muthupandi have both achieved silver medals. Additionally, para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar has made the nation proud by winning a bronze medal.”
Mirabai Chanu, an Olympic medallist, led the Indian team on Day 4 of the Commonwealth Games 2026, marking her third consecutive gold medal at these games. The weightlifting team had a remarkable day, contributing significantly to India's medal tally.
Weightlifting emerged as India's strongest discipline, with Chanambam Rishikanta Singh earning silver in the men's 60kg category, followed by Raja Muthupandi, who also secured silver in the men's 65kg event. Together, they helped India achieve three medals in one day, all from weightlifting.
Meanwhile, Jhandu Kumar achieved bronze in the men's heavyweight para powerlifting event at the SEC Armadillo in Glasgow. The 28-year-old, competing in Group B, recorded his best lift of 190 kg on his second attempt, earning 130.9 points.
