Indian Athletes Excel in Various Sports at Commonwealth Games
Glasgow [Scotland], July 24: Indian competitors have made significant strides in their events at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, showcasing impressive performances in swimming, lawn bowls, powerlifting, and gymnastics, with many advancing to subsequent rounds.
In the swimming category, RVVBK Budigina and Ali Imam participated in the men's 100m freestyle S13 heats. Budigina secured third place in his heat, while Imam finished eighth. Both athletes have successfully moved on to the finals, keeping India's hopes for medals alive in this event, as reported by ESPN.
Srihari Nataraj also progressed in the men's 50m backstroke heat, finishing fifth. His overall ranking of 14th was sufficient to earn him a spot in the semifinals, further enhancing India's representation in swimming as he aims to excel in the upcoming rounds.
In lawn bowls, the women's pairs team of Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki Singh achieved a solid 2-0 victory against South Africa's Thabelo Muvhango and Jacqui van Rensburg during their second sectional round match. This win reflects their strong performance in previous competitions and boosts their chances as they aim for the knockout stages.
In powerlifting, Ashok Kumar Malik and Parmjeet Kumar finished fourth and seventh, respectively, in the men's lightweight category. Malik narrowly missed a podium finish, while Parmjeet concluded his event in seventh place. The women's lightweight category also saw participation from Jaspreet Kaur and Suman Devi, who finished sixth and seventh, respectively.
Despite not securing podium finishes, the Indian powerlifters contributed to the country's diverse representation at the Games. In gymnastics, athletes Tapeshwarnath Das, Swathish KP, Tapan Mohanty, and Yogeshwar Singh competed in both team and individual rounds in subdivision two.
The final standings and qualification for the individual finals will depend on the results from the upcoming subdivision three. The Indian gymnasts will have to wait for the completion of this subdivision to determine their final positions and qualification status.
The Commonwealth Games commenced on July 23 and will run until August 2.
