Leh (Ladakh) [India], August 8: The first-ever Royal Enfield Challengers' Cup concluded with an exhilarating match, where the Indian Army Ice Hockey Team edged out the Leh Kings with a narrow 6-5 victory at the Nawang Dorjay Stobdan (NDS) Stadium in Leh.

Showcasing the finest emerging talent from the Royal Enfield Ice Hockey League, the Leh Kings put up a fierce fight against the country's top Ice Hockey team, ultimately succumbing to a last-minute goal. Padma Namgail netted the winning goal, assisted by Phuntsog Namgail, in a thrilling final that captivated a full house.

The Leh Kings started strong, with Tsering Angchuk scoring first after a precise setup from Mushtaque Ahmad Giri. The Indian Army quickly equalized through Dorjay Angchuk, who scored from Phuntsog Namgail's assist, followed by Jigmath Kunzang's goal, giving them a 2-1 lead by the end of the first period.

They extended their lead early in the second period with Rigzin Norboo's goal, but the Leh Kings fought back valiantly. Stanzin Angchok scored twice in quick succession, leveling the score at 3-3, showcasing their determination.

Rigzin Norboo regained the lead for the Army team, but Leh Kings responded again with Chamba Tsetan's goal, sending the teams into the final period tied at 4-4.

Just a minute into the third period, Stanzin Angchok completed a hat-trick, putting Leh Kings ahead 5-4. However, the Indian Army Ice Hockey Team displayed their resilience, with Jigmath Kunzang equalizing before Padma Namgail scored the decisive goal, securing a thrilling 6-5 victory and the inaugural title.

The tournament's individual accolades highlighted the exceptional talent on display. Sonam Tsetan from the Indian Army was named Best Goalkeeper, while Tsering Angchuk from Leh Kings earned the Best Player award for his remarkable performance.

The Royal Enfield Challengers' Cup was designed to bridge grassroots development with elite competition, allowing players from the Royal Enfield Social Mission's leagues to compete against the best institutional teams in India. The Leh Kings' impressive performance against the champions illustrated the rapid growth of Ice Hockey in the region.

Organized in collaboration with the Ice Hockey Association of Ladakh and the Ice Hockey Association of Lahaul & Spiti, the tournament featured five teams competing in a round-robin format, with the top two advancing to the final.

Vigyat Singh, Director at Eicher Group Foundation, remarked on the progress of Ice Hockey in the Himalayas, noting that the Challengers' Cup in August at Leh's all-season artificial ice rink signifies the growth of the sport. He emphasized the importance of ongoing training and competitive exposure for young athletes.

Beyond the matches, regional teams participated in specialized training sessions, enhancing their skills under the guidance of experienced coaches.

Tsewang Namgyal, Captain of the Indian Army Ice Hockey Team, highlighted the significance of playing in front of large crowds for young players, stating that such exposure can be transformative for their careers.

The Challengers' Cup provided a platform for emerging athletes from the Royal Enfield Ice Hockey League and Spiti Cup to test their skills against top teams, marking a significant milestone for Himalayan ice hockey.

Hosted at Leh's upgraded ice rink, the tournament attracted over 15,000 spectators, introducing competitive ice hockey to both local and international audiences while showcasing the potential for the sport to thrive beyond its traditional winter season.

In partnership with the Ice Hockey Associations of Ladakh and Lahaul & Spiti, the tournament reinforces Royal Enfield's commitment to fostering a sustainable sports ecosystem in the region.
