Aichi-Nagoya, Japan - On September 22, the head coach of the Indian women's cricket team, Amol Muzumdar, expressed his elation over the team's gold medal achievement at the 2026 Asian Games, calling it a 'surreal feeling.' He believes this victory could pave the way for future successes for India in continental competitions.

The Indian women's squad showcased their exceptional talent, securing their second consecutive Asian Games gold medal. They achieved a remarkable 147-run victory over Sri Lanka, thanks to outstanding performances from Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma, while the bowlers effectively restricted Sri Lanka to just 69 runs in 15.4 overs, chasing India's impressive total of 216/3.

Muzumdar praised the team's skill level, stating, 'It’s a fantastic feeling to win gold at the Asian Games and set the stage for India. The team's high skill level means that if we consistently perform at our best, such victories could become the norm.'

This triumph marks India's first gold medal in this edition of the Asian Games, adding to their tally of four silvers and two bronzes, making it their seventh medal overall.

All-rounder Deepti Sharma, who took three wickets in the final, expressed the team's joy in retaining their title. She emphasized the significance of winning the first gold medal of the 2026 Games, stating, 'We are thrilled, and this gold medal brings us double the joy. Earlier this month, the Indian women also defeated Sri Lanka by 72 runs to win the Asia Cup 2026 title. Deepti acknowledged Sri Lanka's strength but highlighted India's ability to dominate when performing well, which contributed to their success. In the final match, India set a challenging target of 216/3, with Smriti Mandhana leading the charge with a stunning 79 runs off 45 balls, while Shafali Verma contributed a quick 48 off 29 balls. Richa Ghosh added a late flourish with an unbeaten 49 runs off just 22 balls.

Mandhana's innings included five fours and seven sixes, marking her 37th half-century in T20 internationals and making her the first female cricketer to surpass 11,000 runs in international cricket.

India's bowlers then dismantled the Sri Lankan batting order, with Deepti Sharma leading the attack with impressive figures of 3/6. Shafali Verma and Shreyanka Patil each took two wickets, while Shree Charani also contributed with two wickets. This 147-run victory secured India's second consecutive gold medal in women's cricket at the Asian Games, following their triumph in Hangzhou in 2023.
