T20 Series Opener Confirmed Despite Traffic Challenges

The opening match of the T20 series between India and Afghanistan is confirmed to take place as planned, according to the Delhi District Cricket Association (DDCA). This announcement was made on Thursday, despite a request from the Delhi Traffic Police to postpone the game due to the upcoming BRICS Summit.

Afghanistan will be 'hosting' India for a three-match series at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, with games scheduled for September 13, 15, and 17.

The DDCA stated on X, "The first T20I between India and Afghanistan on September 13 at Arun Jaitley Stadium will proceed as scheduled."

They further noted, "After discussions with the Delhi Traffic Police, we have received assurances regarding the necessary support and arrangements. There will be no postponement."

Previously, the Delhi Traffic Police had urged the DDCA to consider rescheduling the match, citing significant traffic and security measures required for the BRICS Summit taking place over the weekend.

In a letter dated September 9, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) for the Central Range requested the DDCA to think about rescheduling the match.

The correspondence highlighted that numerous foreign delegates, dignitaries, and VVIPs are expected to arrive in Delhi for the BRICS Summit on September 12 and 13.

The letter detailed that the Summit necessitates extensive traffic management, including VIP route regulations, traffic diversions, and personnel deployment to ensure the smooth movement of foreign delegates and their vehicles.

It was also mentioned that the cricket match on September 13 is anticipated to draw around 25,000 to 35,000 fans. Additionally, the entire Delhi Traffic Police force will already be heavily engaged in managing traffic for the BRICS Summit.

Given the international significance of the BRICS Summit, the DDCA was requested to consider postponing the match to a later date after the Summit and its associated traffic arrangements.
