India vs Afghanistan ODI Series: Anticipation Builds for Rohit Sharma's Return
Excitement Grows for India-Afghanistan ODI Clash
As the world turns its attention to major events like the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the U.S. and the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England and Wales, the upcoming ODI series between India and Afghanistan in Dharamshala might seem less significant. However, local fans are eagerly looking forward to a thrilling match led by Rohit Sharma at the HPCA Stadium tomorrow.
After recovering from a hamstring injury sustained during IPL 2026, the former Indian captain is gearing up for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa. He has been diligently practicing in the nets against pace bowlers and taking throwdowns under the stadium lights, all while a refreshing breeze flows through the ground.
At 39, the 'Hitman' is drawing attention in the absence of Virat Kohli. Meanwhile, India's emerging pace trio—Prasidh Krishna, Arshdeep Singh, and Prince Yadav—are honing their skills with an eye on the upcoming World Cup. All-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy is expected to fill in for the injured Hardik Pandya.
Despite recent successes in T20s and Tests, India's ODI performance has been inconsistent. The team, led by Shubman Gill, has lost three out of its last five ODIs, including a home series defeat against New Zealand. As they face Afghanistan, currently ranked seventh in the ICC ODI standings, the top-ranked Indian team is keen to reestablish its dominance.
Bowling coach Morne Morkel stated, “We will be experimenting with the No. 3 batting position in this series. Whether it’s Ishan, KL, or Yashasvi, this is a great opportunity. With several one-day matches ahead, we’ll explore different options to better structure the team.”
For Afghanistan, the return of leg-spinner Rashid Khan is a significant advantage as they aim for their fifth consecutive ODI win. Fast-bowling all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai adds strength to their attack, while in-form Mohammad Saleem—who was selected after an impressive Test performance in New Chandigarh—will challenge India’s top order. Ishan Kishan is expected to take on the wicketkeeping duties instead of the veteran KL Rahul.
