India Secures Victory Against Japan

In a thrilling encounter at the Asian Champions Trophy, the Indian hockey team faced a significant challenge from Japan, who matched the hosts for three quarters before ultimately succumbing. Celebrating his 150th match, Abhishek scored two remarkable field goals in the 11th and 51st minutes, leading India to a 4-1 victory and extending their winning streak.

The Indian squad played without key players Mandeep Singh, who is rumored to be out of the running for the 2028 LA Olympics, and Nilakanta Sharma, who recently announced his retirement following the tournament. Initially, India struggled to assert their dominance, with a crucial penalty corner conversion by Harmanpreet Singh in the 47th minute igniting the team’s performance, resulting in two additional goals to seal the match.

Previously, India had bested Japan 2-0 in the Asian Games, but this match began with the Japanese team pushing the hosts to their limits.

India started slowly, with Japan taking the initiative right from the whistle. The visitors effectively countered India's strategies by positioning two permanent strikers in the danger zone, creating a significant gap between India's midfield and forwards, allowing Japan's midfielders to operate without pressure. Despite India's previous dominance, they faced challenges as Japan earned four penalty corners before halftime, one of which resulted in a penalty stroke.

Japan employed a high-risk two-touch strategy in the first two quarters, maintaining an active presence in the center of the field. However, this tactic faltered in the 11th minute when Jun Watanabe lost possession. Hardik Singh facilitated a play that found Sukhjeet Singh near the left corner, leading to Abhishek's opening goal, which excited the home crowd.

Despite the initial goal, Japan maintained control with quick, short passes. In the 15th minute, they earned a penalty stroke from a penalty corner, which Shota Yamada successfully converted.

The teams remained evenly matched for the next two quarters, but Japan clearly held the upper hand. However, India gained momentum with their first penalty corner early in the fourth quarter, and Harmanpreet's successful conversion broke the deadlock. With the lead, India adopted a more aggressive approach, creating several opportunities against a fatigued Japanese side. Abhishek scored his second goal after receiving a pass from Sanjay, and Vishnukant Singh capped off the scoring in the 56th minute.

"This was a special and joyous moment for me, scoring twice in our victory. The tournament has been fantastic for us, and these wins are significant. We are focused on maintaining our performance as we aim for a clean sheet in Mohali," Abhishek remarked.

In another match, Korea defeated China 2-1, marking China's third consecutive loss in the tournament. China initially took the lead in the 8th minute with a penalty stroke converted by Chongcong Chen after an attack led by Benhai Chen and Xiangkai Kong. However, Korea dominated possession, earning eight penalty corners without converting any before halftime.

After the break, Korea scored two quick goals within two minutes, with skipper Kim Yong Bok netting in the 35th minute, followed by Kim Jaeho's goal shortly after.

Earlier, Bangladesh faced their third straight defeat, losing 6-1 to Malaysia, with Kamal Abu Azrai scoring twice and other goals from Anuar Akhimullh, Kamaruddin Azimuddin, Shello Silverius, and Aiman Rozemi. Bangladesh's Amirul Islam managed to score a consolation goal.
