India Triumphs Over England in First ODI with Stellar Performances
India Secures Victory in First ODI Against England
Edgbaston [UK], July 14: Indian captain Shubman Gill showcased his skills with a solid half-century, leading the team to a convincing six-wicket victory over England in the first ODI at Edgbaston. This win gives India a 1-0 advantage in the three-match series.
Axar Patel was named Player of the Match for his exceptional all-round display.
This defeat marks England's first loss at Edgbaston in eight ODIs since 2015, with their last defeat at this venue also coming against India in 2014.
India's victory extends their winning streak against England in ODIs to six, the longest for them against this opponent.
Chasing a target of 259, India started confidently despite losing Rohit Sharma early for 11 runs. Gill played a pivotal role, scoring 80 runs before retiring hurt, keeping India well on track for the chase.
Virat Kohli was dismissed for just 5 runs by Jofra Archer shortly after Rohit's exit.
Shreyas Iyer contributed significantly during the middle overs, as India's batters effectively rotated the strike to maintain a manageable required run rate.
Although England's bowlers, including Archer, Josh Tongue, and Sam Curran, took wickets at regular intervals, they couldn't apply sustained pressure as India's middle order remained composed.
Iyer's innings ended with a run-out at 35, leading to KL Rahul's arrival at the crease. However, he fell quickly for just 1 run after being bowled by Tongue.
Patel then stepped up, following his four-wicket haul with an unbeaten 57 runs off 52 balls. Sundar also made a significant contribution with 52 runs off 63 balls, forming an unbroken partnership of 102 runs with Patel to secure the win with over four overs remaining.
Earlier, Axar Patel's bowling brilliance, combined with disciplined performances from Prasidh Krishna and Gurnoor Brar, restricted England to 258 runs.
Patel excelled with the ball, taking four wickets and dismantling England's batting order with his precise left-arm spin. Krishna and Brar each took two wickets, while Jasprit Bumrah claimed his 150th ODI wicket.
England, batting first, were bowled out for 258 runs in 47.5 overs. They started strong but lost momentum, losing five wickets for just 19 runs before Joe Root and Liam Dawson steadied the innings.
Root was the top scorer for England with an unbeaten 76 runs, while Dawson supported him with 68 runs, helping the team recover from a precarious position.
Ben Duckett added 43 runs, and Will Jacks contributed 20 runs, but the rest of the batting lineup struggled to make an impact.
Patel's achievement makes him only the second Indian spinner to take four wickets in the final overs of an ODI innings, matching Ravindra Jadeja's record from 2013.
England's innings began positively with Duckett and Jacob Bethell establishing a solid foundation, but India's bowlers responded effectively at crucial moments.
Root's calmness under pressure, along with his ability to rotate the strike, helped prevent a total collapse, while Dawson's aggressive batting ensured England crossed the 250-run mark despite earlier troubles.
