India Secures Victory with Strategic Play

In a thrilling match at the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium, India showcased their prowess by defeating China 5-2, marking their second consecutive win in the Asian Champions Trophy. The team's captain, Harmanpreet Singh, played a pivotal role, effectively converting penalty corners and utilizing long passes to penetrate China's defense.

Despite fielding several debutants, China proved to be a formidable opponent for the favorites, India. Both Harmanpreet and Sukhjeet Singh scored two goals each, while Jugraj Singh added another through a penalty corner, ensuring a comfortable victory. However, the Indian team experienced some tense moments, prompting coach Craig Fulton to suggest that the outcome could have been even more favorable.

Fulton remarked, 'The opposing team was new, and the match was closely contested. The first two quarters were decent, but after halftime, our approach became clearer. The long passes were effective, and timely penalty corners were crucial. We are focusing on the positives from this match.'

When discussing Jugraj's successful penalty corner conversion after two earlier misses, Fulton stated, 'That was part of the strategy; we always need a backup plan. He executed it well in the end.'

Currently leading the points table with six points, Hardik Singh emphasized that their goal extends beyond this tournament. 'China was a tough competitor, and every team poses a similar challenge. Our strategy was to force mistakes and capitalize on those opportunities. We are preparing for the LA Olympics, and this tournament, along with the Pro League, is vital for us,' he explained.

Addressing concerns about senior players and retirement rumors, the 28-year-old midfielder noted, 'The senior players hold significant responsibility, guiding the juniors and contributing as needed during matches. While discussions about transitions occur off the field, we maintain a positive environment within the squad, and whatever happens will be for the best.'

China, featuring nearly ten new players, initially challenged the Indian side for the first 30 minutes. Their midfielders were instrumental, and the wingers effectively launched attacks. Both teams engaged in fast-paced hockey during the first quarter, but India gained an advantage with their long passes.

Chinese striker Yulai Zhao attempted to advance but was halted by Indian defender Sanjay. Zhao's appeal for a stick check was dismissed by the umpire, leading to his frustration. Unfazed, India quickly counterattacked, resulting in Sukhjeet scoring the first goal, capitalizing on their only opportunity.

Although China showed resilience, their efforts were thwarted as the first quarter concluded in favor of India. The second quarter saw a shift, with China gaining momentum through solo runs. They earned the match's first penalty corner but failed to convert. India also squandered a chance to double their lead, but China soon equalized with a goal from Peng Yang, prompting India to respond swiftly.

A long pass from Harmanpreet set up Hardik for a penalty corner, which Harmanpreet converted without error. China had another opportunity to score, but Indian goalkeeper Krishan Pathak denied them.

The second half commenced with India earning a penalty corner, leading to Harmanpreet's second goal. Shortly after, Sukhjeet extended the lead by scoring from a pass by Aditya Lalage, following a well-controlled aerial ball from Harmanpreet.

China managed to score again two minutes later, with Chongcong Chen finding the net from their fourth penalty corner. India continued to apply pressure, securing consecutive penalty corners early in the fourth quarter, with Jugraj successfully converting.

India's next challenge will be against Japan in their upcoming round-robin match on Friday.
