New Delhi, May 28: For the first time, India will host two significant continental athletics events—the Asian Relay Championships and the Asian Indoor Championships.
Chandigarh has been selected as the venue for the 2027 Asian Relay Championships, while Bhubaneswar will welcome the 2028 Asian Indoor Championships, according to the Athletics Federation of India (AFI).
During a recent Council Meeting of the Asian Athletics Association in Hong Kong, India was awarded these prestigious events, as confirmed by Bahadur Singh Sagoo, the AFI president.
"This is a tremendous opportunity for athletics and sports in general. Hosting international competitions will allow the athletics community to see elite athletes compete," Sagoo stated.
Odisha's Chief Minister, Mohan Charan Majhi, expressed that the 2028 Asian Indoor Championships would significantly enhance the sports culture in both the state and the nation.
"The Asian Indoor Championships will serve as excellent preparation for the upcoming 2028 World Athletics Indoor Championships," he added.
The 2028 Asian Indoor Championships are scheduled to take place in January at Bhubaneswar's Indoor Stadium. Meanwhile, the Asian Relay Championships will occur in May 2027 in Chandigarh.
"The Chandigarh Administration is fully supportive of this continental event," Sagoo noted, adding that the championships will be hosted at the Sector 7 Sports Complex.
Mandeep Singh Brar, Chandigarh's home secretary, remarked that organizing the Asian Relay Championships will significantly enhance the region's sports culture.
"Chandigarh is thrilled to host this prestigious continental competition for the first time, and we look forward to welcoming top athletes from across Asia," Brar stated.
The Asian Relay Championships will feature six events: Men's 4x100m and 4x400m relays, Women's 4x100m and 4x400m relays, and mixed relays in both 4x100m and 4x400m categories.
