Panaji (Goa) [India], June 24: India has made a significant mark in the seniors category, showcasing a strong competitive spirit as Day 2 of the 5th Bonus Asia Cup Bridge Championships 2026 wraps up at the Taj Cidade de Goa Horizon.
This prestigious tournament, recognized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports (MYAS) and backed by the Sports Authority of India (SAI), features nearly 300 top-tier players from 46 teams representing 16 countries, as per an official announcement.
The India A Seniors team excelled, finishing the first round robin at the top of the leaderboard with 87.25 Victory Points (VPs), outpacing Thailand, which secured second place with 77.48 VPs. Australia follows closely in third with 77.24 VPs, while Japan is in fourth with 76.47 VPs. Meanwhile, India B Seniors ended the day in sixth place with 75.60 VPs, just ahead of Chinese Taipei at 75.50 VPs. Both Indian teams are well-positioned for a shot at the semi-finals as the second round robin kicks off tomorrow.
In the Open Teams division, China leads with an impressive 100.88 VPs, while Hong Kong China A is in second with 100.20 VPs. India B has climbed to third place with 97.15 VPs, closely followed by India A in fourth with 90.40 VPs. Japan and Korea are also in contention, with 87.80 VPs and 87.40 VPs, respectively.
The Mixed Teams standings show China A and China B asserting their dominance with 106.98 VPs and 102.31 VPs, respectively. Hong Kong China A is comfortably in third with 96.25 VPs. The battle for the fourth qualifying spot is intense, with Thailand currently in the lead at 85.20 VPs, trailed by Chinese Taipei at 81.11 VPs, and India B at 80.53 VPs.
In the Women’s Teams category, defending champions Indonesia are leading with 84.31 VPs, followed by China at 79.85 VPs. Hong Kong China B is in third with 67.77 VPs, while India A and Japan are in a tight race for the last semi-final spot, holding 63.00 VPs and 62.60 VPs, respectively.
The qualification rounds will continue daily until June 25, serving as a preliminary filter before the top four teams in each division advance to the semi-finals. The knockout rounds and the Pairs Qualifying Series will commence on June 26, culminating in the Grand Finals and closing ceremony on Saturday, June 27.
