India Secures Thrilling Semi-Final Win Against England in T20 World Cup 2026
India Advances to T20 World Cup Final
In a nail-biting semi-final at the renowned Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, India triumphed over England by a narrow margin of seven runs, securing their place in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final for the second consecutive time.
The match turned into a high-scoring affair, with India setting a formidable target of 253 runs after batting first. The total of 499 runs scored in the match ranks as the second-highest in Men's T20 International history, following the record of 517 runs achieved in a 2023 match between South Africa and West Indies.
India also holds the third and fourth-highest match aggregates, with 496 runs against New Zealand prior to this tournament and 488 runs against West Indies in 2016.
India's innings featured a standout performance from Sanju Samson, who scored 89 runs, supported by Shivam Dube's 43 runs off 25 balls and Ishan Kishan's explosive 39 runs from just 18 balls.
Contributions from Tilak Varma (21 off 7 balls) and Hardik Pandya (27 off 12 balls) propelled India to the highest total ever recorded in a T20 World Cup knockout match. England's bowling attack saw Will Jacks and Adil Rashid each take two wickets, while Jofra Archer claimed the vital wicket of Varma.
In reply, Jacob Bethell's impressive century kept England competitive, but they ultimately fell short by seven runs.
The match was notable for its record-breaking 34 sixes, surpassing the previous T20 World Cup record of 31 sixes set during a match between Zimbabwe and West Indies earlier in the tournament.
A total of 73 boundaries were struck, including 39 fours and 34 sixes, marking the highest number of boundaries in a T20 World Cup match, well ahead of the previous record of 61 set in a 2016 match between England and South Africa.
India is now set to face New Zealand in the final, scheduled for Sunday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
