India Prepares for Challenging Opener Against China in Women's FIH Hockey World Cup
India Faces Tough Challenge in World Cup Opener
On Sunday, India enters the Women’s FIH Hockey World Cup with confidence, set to face a formidable opponent in China, coached by Sjoerd Marijne. This match is crucial as both teams vie for a strong start in the competitive Pool D.
Currently ranked ninth globally, India will clash with the second-ranked Chinese team, who recently secured a silver medal at the Paris Olympics. This encounter could significantly influence India's overall performance in the tournament.
With England and South Africa also competing in the same pool and the tournament adopting a new format, India must avoid a sluggish beginning.
The team has dedicated ample time to acclimatize to the European climate, training at the Wagener Stadium and engaging in a practice match against the Netherlands, the defending champions.
This match against China is particularly important as the two sides are scheduled to meet again at the upcoming Asian Games.
India's highest achievement in the World Cup was a fourth-place finish in 1974, led by Ajinder Kaur. Having participated in only eight of the last 15 tournaments, the team aims to surpass their ninth-place finish from 2022.
Notably, 11 players in the squad will be making their World Cup debut, yet they bring substantial experience from high-stakes matches.
Goalkeeper Savita stands out as the most seasoned player in the tournament, boasting 313 international caps. This will be her third World Cup appearance, having previously competed in two Olympics and three Asian Games.
Defender Sushila Chanu has accumulated 262 caps, while teammates Navneet Kaur, Nikki Pradhan, and Neha Goyal have each surpassed the 200-match milestone.
Reflecting on their near-miss at the Tokyo Olympics, Savita expressed that the disappointment still motivates the team. “The pain of missing out on a medal at the Tokyo Olympics after coming so close still lingers. This time, we will not hesitate,” she stated.
“We have high expectations from ourselves and want to finish on the podium.” India's confidence has been bolstered by a series of strong performances over the past year.
The team recently triumphed in the FIH Nations Cup in New Zealand, securing their return to the Pro League. Drag-flicker Deepika has regained her scoring prowess after an injury, netting six goals during the tournament.
Navneet has also emerged as a vital offensive player, scoring six goals in the Asia Cup and four in the World Cup qualifiers, where she was honored as the Player of the Tournament.
However, India must remain cautious of China's recent success. In the 2025 Asia Cup held in Hangzhou, China defeated India 4-1 and went on to claim the continental title. The Chinese team also earned silver at the Paris Olympics and finished fourth in the last two Pro League seasons.
China's resurgence has been attributed to Australian coach Alison Annan, a six-time FIH Coach of the Year, who previously led the Netherlands to World Cup and Olympic victories.
India's coach Marijne, who guided the team to a fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics, is optimistic about his players' readiness. “We see the World Cup as the next step after the FIH Nations Cup. This team is full of confidence and ready to face the challenges ahead,” he remarked.
Marijne has also enhanced his coaching staff, bringing in Wayne Lombard as the head scientific advisor and athletic performance expert, Matias Vila for analysis, and Taeke Taekema for specialized drag-flick training.
Rodet Yila and Ciara Yila contribute sports-science expertise to a support system that emphasizes physical preparation and performance.
While China's quality and ranking position them as favorites, India has demonstrated significant progress over the past year, instilling belief that they can compete with the Olympic silver medallists.
A favorable outcome against China would not only earn India crucial points but also enhance their confidence for the remaining pool matches, providing a psychological advantage ahead of their Asian Games encounter next month.
The match is scheduled to commence at 4:30 PM IST.
