Excitement Builds for the 2030 Commonwealth Games

On August 3, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha and Gujarat's Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghvi expressed their enthusiasm for hosting the upcoming Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Ahmedabad in 2030, following the conclusion of this year's event.

India has officially embarked on its journey to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, marked by the ceremonial transfer of the Commonwealth Games Flag during a vibrant Closing Ceremony that celebrated the end of Glasgow 2026 while looking forward to the landmark centenary edition.

Usha shared her excitement on X, stating, "Thank you, Glasgow. We embrace the responsibility of welcoming the centenary Commonwealth Games to India with gratitude. I eagerly anticipate the arrival of Commonwealth Nations and athletes. Looking forward to a memorable #Amdavad2030 CWG."

Sanghvi, who was part of the Gujarat delegation that engaged with Commonwealth Sport officials, also expressed his sentiments on X, saying, "From Glasgow with pride. To Amdavad with promise. See you in 2030."

The British High Commission in India also shared their excitement, tweeting, "With the ceremonial handover of the Commonwealth Sport Flag, the countdown to #Amdavad2030 begins! After an incredible showing at #Glasgow2026, we’re thrilled to see India host the Commonwealth Games in 2030."

This ceremonial handover signifies the return of the Commonwealth Games to India after the 2010 edition in New Delhi and marks the first time Gujarat will host the event. It also heralds a new era for Indian sports as the country prepares to welcome athletes from across the Commonwealth for the historic 2030 edition. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports aims to enhance traditional sports while developing world-class infrastructure to achieve a record medal tally.

The 2026 Games were held under a compact format, which led to the exclusion of major Indian medal-winning sports such as shooting, wrestling, and badminton.

India secured fourth place in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games medal tally, achieving a total of 39 medals, which included 13 gold, 17 silver, and nine bronze.
