India's Stellar Performance at World Archery Para Series

In Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on September 9, Sheetal Devi secured the gold medal in the women's compound event, contributing to India's impressive tally of 15 medals—comprising four gold, three silver, and eight bronze—at the World Archery Para Series 2026 Stage 3, as reported by a leading sports outlet.

The 19-year-old world champion triumphed over Kazakhstan's Aizada Seidan in a thrilling shoot-off after their match ended in a tie at 144 points. Sheetal's decisive arrow scored a 10, while Seidan managed a 9, clinching the title for India at the Sabarmati Riverfront. This victory marked Sheetal's first individual gold at the World Archery Para Series.

Ranked as the world's top archer, Sheetal entered the elimination rounds as the leading seed, having achieved a season-best score of 698 in the qualification round, which also set a new Asian record. She advanced through the rounds by defeating Slovakia's Liliana Lacova 147-142 in the round of 16, Great Britain's Jessica Stretton 145-142 in the quarter-finals, and compatriot Sarita 145-143 in the semi-finals.

Sarita also earned a podium finish, winning the bronze medal by overcoming China's Wang Huiting 141-140 in the bronze medal match.

Earlier in the tournament, Sheetal and fellow Paris 2024 bronze medallist Rakesh Kumar set a world record in the mixed team event, scoring a total of 1,400 points in the compound mixed team qualification, surpassing their previous record of 1,399 set at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. Sheetal contributed 698 points, while Rakesh added 702.

In the elimination rounds, Toman Kumar replaced Rakesh Kumar in the compound mixed team, and the duo secured a bronze medal with a decisive 157-145 victory over Iraq. India narrowly missed a spot in the gold medal match after a shoot-off loss to China following a tie at 156.

In another highlight, Bhawna and Harvinder Singh claimed gold in the recurve mixed team event, defeating China's Liang Qiurong and Xia Lei 6-0, winning all three sets 35-31, 36-33, and 34-32.

Bhawna also earned a bronze in the women's individual recurve event, defeating compatriot Rajshri Dhanraj Rathod 6-0.

Reigning compound men's world champion Toman Kumar concluded his individual campaign with a bronze medal after defeating Iraq's Abbas Kadhim 143-138, having previously lost to eventual champion Ken Swagumilang of Indonesia in the semi-finals.

The final day of competition added to India's remarkable performance earlier in the series. On Tuesday, Toman Kumar and Shyam Sunder Swami won gold in the compound men's doubles, defeating Iraq 152-139. Paris 2024 Paralympic champion Harvinder Singh and Vijay Sundi also secured gold in the recurve men's doubles, beating Slovakia 6-2.

Bhawna and Pooja earned silver in the recurve women's doubles, while Swati Chaudhary and Adil Mohamed Nazir Ansari finished as runners-up in the W1 mixed team event, a category for athletes with significant physical impairments who shoot from wheelchairs.

India also achieved bronze in both W1 doubles events, with Adil Mohamed Nazir Ansari and Naveen Dalal finishing third in the men's category, while Swati Chaudhary and Vasundhra Teotia claimed bronze in the women's event. Swati added another bronze in the individual W1 women's competition.

Earlier, Tanvi Pravin Ingale secured silver, and Yugal Garg won bronze in the visually impaired category.

This event, held in Ahmedabad from September 5 to 9, marked the first time India hosted a World Archery Para Series.
