India secured fourth place in the overall medal standings, with China leading the pack with 341 medals, including 169 gold. Japan followed in second place with 269 medals, while South Korea came in third with 150 medals. Although India's medal count fell short of the record 106 medals achieved at the Hangzhou Games in 2023, the 2026 campaign was marked by several landmark successes across various sports.
The most notable achievements came in team sports, where India clinched gold in both men's and women's categories in cricket, kabaddi, and hockey. The women's cricket team triumphed with a 147-run victory over Sri Lanka, while the men's team defeated Pakistan by 19 runs in a thrilling final.
In kabaddi, both the men's and women's teams emerged victorious, with the women defending their title against Iran and the men overcoming a tough challenge to secure their ninth gold in ten editions since the sport's inclusion in 1990.
Hockey also saw India achieve a clean sweep, with the women's team ending a 44-year wait for an Asian Games gold by defeating China 1-0, while the men's team successfully defended their title with a 5-1 victory over Malaysia.
These victories have ensured that both the men's and women's hockey teams have qualified for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
Archery was another highlight, with India winning nine medals, including five golds. Seventeen-year-old Kumkum Mohod made history by becoming the first Indian to win an individual recurve gold at the Asian Games, securing a spot for India at the LA 2028 Olympics.
In boxing, India achieved its best-ever performance at the Asian Games, winning three golds and three bronzes, with Lovlina Borgohain, Parveen Hooda, and Ankush Panghal leading the charge.
Wrestling also shone brightly, yielding six medals, while shooting contributed 15 medals to India's tally. Athletics emerged as the largest medal-producing discipline, with 24 medals, including a gold in the women's 4x400m relay.
Golf saw Pranavi Urs make history as the first Indian woman to win an individual Asian Games gold, while squash and sailing added to the medal count with multiple podium finishes.
Despite a less successful campaign in badminton and table tennis, India celebrated numerous historic achievements, showcasing a blend of established dominance and new breakthroughs across various sports.
