India Announces T20I Squads for UK Tour and Asian Games 2026
BCCI Unveils New T20I Squads
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has revealed the T20I squads for the upcoming tour to the United Kingdom, where India will compete in two separate series against Ireland and England. Additionally, the squad for the Asian Games 2026 has also been announced. As India prepares for the next two-year cycle leading up to the T20 World Cup 2028, they have taken a fresh approach in the T20 format by appointing Shreyas Iyer as the new captain, which means Suryakumar Yadav has been removed from the captaincy and excluded from the squad.
Recently, former captain Rohit Sharma was spotted interacting with Iyer for the first time since the announcement. During a visit to the Mumbai T20 League match between Triumphs Knights MNE and Iyer’s SoBo Mumbai Falcons, Rohit met Iyer, and the two shared a friendly handshake and embrace. Watch the moment here:

Shreyas Iyer's Leadership Journey
Shreyas Iyer Was Close To Getting Into T20 World Cup 2026 Squad
During the press conference announcing the squads, chief selector Ajit Agarkar highlighted that Shreyas Iyer was chosen due to his impressive leadership skills demonstrated in the IPL, where he has led three different teams to the finals, including winning the title with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2024. Agarkar mentioned that Iyer was on the verge of being selected for the T20 World Cup 2026. He stated, “We have observed Shreyas's performance over the years, leading various franchises. He won the final once and faced a challenging season this year after a strong start. His individual performances have been commendable. He was quite close to making it into the (T20) World Cup squad. With Surya still in the mix, there was no space for him, making Shreyas a standout candidate with ample experience in the T20 format; this presents a new challenge for him.”
