Lucknow, Oct 5: Following their recent success at the Asian Games, India is set to face the West Indies in a five-match T20I series, starting at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.
The series comes just three days after the West Indies achieved a remarkable feat by chasing down 352 runs in New Chandigarh, marking their highest successful ODI chase against India. Captain Shai Hope's outstanding performance, scoring an unbeaten 162, has undoubtedly boosted the team's confidence ahead of the T20 format.
India will need to be cautious of the West Indies' formidable batting lineup, known for their explosive power-hitting, as demonstrated in the recent ODI series.
In a squad update, wicketkeeper-batter Amir Jangoo has been included as a replacement for Jewel Andrew, who is recovering from a finger injury sustained during the third ODI.
According to a statement from Cricket West Indies, "Amir Jangoo has been added to the squad as cover for the wicketkeeping position following the finger injury sustained by Jewel Andrew during Saturday’s third ODI. Andrew is still being monitored and assessed by the medical team."
The last T20I series between India and West Indies took place in the Caribbean in 2023, where the hosts emerged victorious with a 3-2 series win. India will now embark on a new chapter in T20 cricket under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, with Tilak Varma serving as his deputy.
Shreyas Iyer recently led India to a thrilling 19-run victory over Pakistan in the Asian Games final held in Nisshin, Japan. He will now shift his focus to the upcoming T20I series against a confident West Indies side.
Historically, India has dominated T20 encounters against the West Indies, holding a 20-10 advantage in 31 matches. Their home record is particularly impressive, with nine wins out of 11 T20I matches played against the West Indies on Indian soil.
Since 2018, India has secured 18 victories out of 23 T20I matches at home against the West Indies.
The West Indies have shown they can challenge India effectively, especially when their power hitters perform well and their bowlers execute their plans. In Lucknow, they will need to maintain their aggressive approach while avoiding the middle-over mistakes that have often favored India.
Shai Hope will be pivotal to their strategy. Despite a minor groin issue, he excelled during the chase, scoring 62 runs off his last 39 balls. His blend of composure and power will be crucial in the T20 format.
In New Chandigarh, Keemo Paul also made a significant contribution, scoring 44 runs off 35 balls after being promoted in the batting order. His ability to perform with both bat and ball adds another dimension to the West Indies' lineup.
The Ekana Stadium is generally favorable for batting, although spinners may come into play as the match progresses. Teams that can adapt their pace and bat effectively early on are likely to gain an advantage.
On Sunday, the West Indies conducted a training session under the stadium lights, while India is scheduled to practice on Tuesday after returning from Japan.
The remaining four T20I matches will take place in Ranchi on October 9, Indore on October 11, Hyderabad on October 14, and Bengaluru on October 17.
