India Advances to Second Round of FIH Women's Hockey World Cup 2026
India Secures Spot in Next Round
Amstelveen [Netherlands], August 20: The Indian women's hockey team has successfully progressed to the second round of the FIH Women's Hockey World Cup 2026 after managing a 0-0 draw against England in their final Pool D match, finishing second in the group behind China.
Entering the match, India was aware that a draw would suffice for advancement, yet they played with an aggressive mindset. They earned three penalty corners in the first quarter but failed to capitalize on any, with Ishika and Salima Tete missing opportunities for field goals, as reported by ESPN.
As the match progressed, England intensified their efforts, gaining control in the third quarter. Similar to their opening match against China, India struggled to maintain possession, leading to a series of penalty corners for England. However, India's defense held strong.
Salima's defensive rushes were impressive, and Sakshi Rana made a crucial save off the line, while Savita Punia was exceptional in goal. Heading into the final quarter, India needed to maintain their composure for just 15 more minutes to secure their place in the next round.
Though it wasn't perfect, India's performance was marked by determination and resilience. England launched relentless attacks, even pulling their goalkeeper for an extra outfield player in the final five minutes. Yet, India's defense remained unyielding, and when they were tested, Bichu Devi was there to make the save.
In the dying moments, a powerful shot from Tessa Howard seemed destined for the goal, but Bichu made a spectacular save, igniting celebrations among the Indian players.
"We defended exceptionally well as a unit today. England is a formidable team, but we never stopped fighting until the final whistle," stated skipper Salima after the match, according to ESPN.
India's next challenge will be against the Netherlands in the opening match of the second pool phase on Friday evening.
