India Achieves Milestone with 200th T20I Victory Against New Zealand
Historic Win for India in T20I Series
Christchurch [New Zealand], October 26: India has made history by becoming the first team to achieve 200 wins in men's T20 Internationals, following a thrilling four-wicket victory over New Zealand in the second match of their five-match series at Hagley Oval.
In pursuit of 181 runs, India found themselves in a tough spot at 70 for five but managed to recover, finishing at 181 for six. The duo of Tilak Varma and Nitish Kumar Reddy played a crucial role, forming an unbeaten partnership of 69 runs for the seventh wicket to guide their team to victory.
This win puts India ahead 2-0 in the series, with three matches still to play. Since their T20I debut in 2006, India has won 200 out of 300 matches, with 83 losses and the rest resulting in ties or no results.
India boasts an impressive winning percentage of 71.20% among Full Member nations in T20Is.
Varma finished not out on 47, while Reddy made a quick 26 off just 13 balls, showcasing their ability to handle pressure. Needing 11 runs in the final over, they completed the chase with just one ball to spare.
Their partnership surpassed the previous Indian record for the seventh wicket in T20Is, which was 63 runs set by Dinesh Karthik and Krunal Pandya against New Zealand in 2019.
Earlier, New Zealand batted first and scored 180 for five, recovering from early losses thanks to Glenn Phillips and Bevon Jacobs.
Arshdeep Singh took the wicket of Tim Seifert early on, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar dismissed Daryl Mitchell. Prince Yadav also contributed by bowling Finn Allen, leaving New Zealand at 41 for three after the Powerplay.
Phillips and Jacobs steadied the innings with a solid 116-run partnership, combining aggressive and sensible batting. Phillips scored 70 runs off 43 balls, while Jacobs added 58 runs from 46 balls.
Phillips was caught by Naman Dhir in the 18th over, followed by Jacobs' dismissal shortly after. Michael Bracewell provided a late surge with a boundary and a six off his only two deliveries, helping New Zealand finish at 180 for five.
India's innings started steadily with Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma putting together 40 runs for the first wicket. However, Samson fell to Jacob Duffy, and teenage batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was dismissed for just four runs.
Following Abhishek's wicket, Axar Patel and captain Shreyas Iyer also fell, with Mitchell Santner playing a key role in New Zealand's comeback. Santner dismissed Naman Dhir, who scored a quick 31 off 17 balls, leaving India in a precarious position.
Despite the collapse, Varma remained steady until Reddy joined him to turn the match around and secure India's landmark victory.
The two teams will face off again in the third T20I in Wellington on October 27.
