ICC Suspends Cricket Canada Membership Amid Governance Issues
ICC Takes Action Against Cricket Canada
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the immediate suspension of Cricket Canada's membership due to significant violations of its membership criteria. This decision aims to safeguard Canadian players and national teams from any adverse effects. The ICC Board reached this conclusion during a recent meeting held in Ahmedabad, where the focus was on protecting player interests while addressing the governance challenges faced by Cricket Canada.
Reasons Behind the Suspension of Cricket Canada's Membership
Cricket Canada has been embroiled in controversy in recent weeks. The ICC is currently investigating allegations of selection pressures and potential match-fixing, which were brought to light by former coach Khurram Chohan in a leaked conversation, particularly concerning Canada's T20 World Cup match against New Zealand. The ICC emphasized its commitment to safeguarding the interests of Canadian players, ensuring they are not adversely affected by the governance issues plaguing their national body.
Despite the suspension, both the men's and women's national teams from Canada will still be eligible to participate in ICC events. Furthermore, the ICC confirmed that Cricket Canada will continue to receive funding through a regulated system managed by the ICC. This funding will be specifically allocated for approved national team programs, ensuring the ongoing development and participation of the teams.
Cricket Canada will be provided with a list of requirements that must be met for its membership to be reinstated. The ICC Normalisation Committee, in collaboration with ICC management, will monitor the progress of these requirements. Reinstatement will only be considered once the Board is satisfied that all conditions have been fulfilled.
