Hockey India Faces Dilemma Over Team Selection for Asian Games and World Cup
Ministry Urges Hockey India for Optimal Team Selection
The Sports Ministry is urging Hockey India to select its top teams for the upcoming Asian Games, amidst discussions on whether distinct squads should be formed for this continental event and the World Cup scheduled later this year. This is to prevent player fatigue.
The World Cup is set to take place from August 15 to 30 in Belgium and the Netherlands, while the Asian Games will occur from September 19 to October 4 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
Although the two tournaments do not overlap directly, the short recovery period for athletes, both male and female, is raising significant concerns.
Neither Craig Fulton, the men's head coach, nor Sjoerd Marijne, the women's coach, supports the idea of fielding two separate teams, advocating instead for the same squad to compete in both high-stakes tournaments.
"Ideally, there should be two teams, with the A teams designated for the Asian Games, as this serves as an Olympic qualifier," a source from the ministry stated.
"The ministry has already informed national federations to maintain a competitive B team ready for various competitions. In hockey, we have an abundance of talent to form two distinct teams for both genders, considering the schedule," the source added.
Winning gold in both the men's and women's categories at the Asian Games will secure a spot for the Los Angeles Games in 2028.
The World Cup, being the premier event in hockey, sees both Fulton and Marijne focused on achieving positive outcomes following a challenging previous season and a tumultuous year thus far for their teams.
"We will field our best teams for both the Asian Games and the World Cup; however, squad selections are still pending as we are evaluating all factors," stated Bholanath Singh, Secretary General of Hockey India, in response to the ministry's recommendations.
Concerns about player burnout have been a recurring theme in years when the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games are closely scheduled.
Notably, the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will have a reduced lineup, excluding hockey along with several other major sports such as shooting, badminton, wrestling, and table tennis.
