India to Face Japan in Groundbreaking T20I Match

New Delhi, September 4: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Devajit Saikia expressed excitement as India prepares to compete in a men's T20I against Japan. He emphasized that this match represents a significant milestone in promoting Indian cricket in new regions, particularly in Japan and East Asia.

This T20I will kick off the celebrations for the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between India and Japan.

The historic Suzuki Cup match is scheduled for September 22 at the Sano International Cricket Ground, marking the first time India will play a men's T20I against Japan.

Saikia stated, “The BCCI is thrilled to participate in this momentous event, as the Indian and Japanese men's teams unite for a unique T20 International in Japan. This is a pivotal moment for cricket, allowing the Indian team to explore new territories and introduce the sport to a broader audience in Japan and East Asia.”

He further noted, “India and Japan enjoy a robust and enduring friendship, and we are delighted that cricket will play a role in celebrating 75 years of bilateral relations. We extend our gratitude to the Japan Cricket Association (JCA) for facilitating this match.”

Saikia reiterated the BCCI's commitment to expanding cricket beyond its traditional markets, collaborating with the JCA to enhance the sport's presence in Japan.

“The BCCI believes in the necessity of cricket's growth beyond its conventional territories. As the largest cricket board globally, we acknowledge our duty to foster this growth. We will work closely with the JCA to fortify cricket in Japan and nurture this relationship in the future,” he added.

This match is the inaugural event of the “Sport 75” initiative, which emerged from discussions between Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The initiative aims to enhance human exchanges and cooperation in sports between India and Japan, especially in light of India's aspirations to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2036.
