Historic Boxing Match Set for January 2027 in India Featuring Neeraj Goyat and Anthony Pettis
Press Conference Marks the Countdown to a Major Boxing Event
Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], November 6: Neeraj Goyat and former UFC champion Anthony "Showtime" Pettis met face-to-face for the first time today during a press conference in Hyderabad, announcing their upcoming fight scheduled for January 23, 2027. This event is touted as the largest professional boxing match ever held in India, according to an official announcement.
The press conference, organized by the Indian Pro Boxing League (IPBL) in collaboration with the Indian Boxing Council (IBC) and Most Valuable Promotions (MVP), featured a surprise video message from MVP co-founder Jake Paul, who expressed his preference for Chennai as the host city.
In his message, Paul emphasized, "We at MVP are always pursuing historic opportunities, and bringing this event to Chennai is something I’m very enthusiastic about." He highlighted that this would mark a significant return for Indian boxing, 47 years after Muhammad Ali's historic fight in the city.
Paul noted, "Our research indicates that around this time, 47 years ago, Muhammad Ali fought in that same venue. This would represent the biggest comeback for Indian boxing in nearly five decades," referring to Ali's exhibition match at Chennai's Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in January 1980, which was the last time a globally recognized fighter competed there. The Goyat vs. Pettis match will be the first major professional boxing event in Chennai since then.
When discussing the Indian market, Paul remarked, "Having the right partners makes entering this market much smoother, and we have that here."
The IPBL confirmed that Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, and Chennai are all potential locations for the fight, with details regarding the host city, venue, ticketing, and broadcasting to be revealed in the upcoming weeks.
Akshar Madhavaram, CEO and Co-Founder of IPBL, stated, "Jake's message illustrates how seriously the global community is taking this fight. Chennai has a rich history, and all three cities have made compelling cases. We will announce the host city soon. What is certain is the date—January 23, 2027—and that India has never experienced a boxing night like this one."
Neeraj Goyat, the first Indian boxer to sign with MVP and a participant in the widely viewed Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson card, expressed, "Last time, the world watched me from Texas. This time, my people will see me at home. I respect Anthony; he is a legend in MMA, but in a boxing ring in India, no one can defeat me."
Anthony Pettis, a former UFC lightweight champion and co-owner of IPBL, stated, "I’m not just a visitor; I’m an owner in this league. India has the fans and fighters; it just hasn’t had the right platform. Neeraj has earned this opportunity, but I’ve been fighting world champions for fifteen years. On January 23, he will learn what that entails."
Vivek from the Indian Boxing Council added, "Every match on this card is IBC-sanctioned to WBC standards. Professional boxing in India has lacked a proper stage and structure; this event provides both. We have fighters on this undercard who could become world champions within two years."
The two fighters will meet again at the Indian Fight League event in Hyderabad tonight and for a second time on November 14 at the PFL event in Dubai. Full details regarding the fight card, broadcasting partners, and ticketing will be announced soon.
In an interview, Anthony Pettis expressed his belief that boxing has a more profound history than MMA and his desire to provide Indian fighters with a platform to showcase their skills globally.
"I love boxing. It has a much richer history than mixed martial arts. While MMA is currently huge due to the UFC, boxing has deeper roots. Muhammad Ali fought here before, and I want to give India a chance to show its boxing legacy to the world," he stated.
Pettis mentioned that he chose to fight Goyat due to his popularity in India and his ability to connect combat sports with mainstream audiences.
"He’s one of the most popular figures in India. He has a significant following and serves as a bridge between combat sports and mainstream media," he noted.
Meanwhile, Neeraj Goyat expressed that fighting on home turf would make the bout a monumental occasion for Indian fans and combat sports enthusiasts.
"I’m fighting on my home ground, in my territory, and after 10 years. A lot has happened in my journey during that time. For Indian fans and combat sports enthusiasts, this will be a significant event—a UFC champion versus the real deal," he said.
Goyat also pointed out that while Pettis is a former MMA world champion, he is not a boxing champion and described him as a regular opponent despite his accolades.
"He is a former world champion in MMA, not in boxing. However, his name being associated with this event is significant. But for me, he’s just another fighter," he concluded.
