Indian Fencers Make History in Hong Kong

Hong Kong, July 22: The Senior World Fencing Championships 2026 commenced at the AsiaWorld-Expo, marking a significant milestone for Indian fencing. This prestigious nine-day event features over 1,000 elite competitors from more than 100 countries, kicking off with intense qualification rounds in Men's Individual Foil and Women's Individual Epee.

The Indian contingent, consisting of 24 athletes—12 men and 12 women—across all three fencing disciplines, made a remarkable impact. Epee fencers Taniksha Khatri and Prachi Lohan achieved a historic first by qualifying for the Main Table of 64 (Direct Elimination Round) at the Senior World Championships, a groundbreaking moment for Indian women in this sport.

Both fencers navigated through tough competition in round-robin pool play and challenging preliminary elimination rounds against some of the world's top-ranked fencers, securing their places in the elite main draw and marking a significant advancement for Indian fencing.

Rajeev Mehta, Secretary General of the Fencing Confederation of Asia and the Fencing Association of India, expressed his pride in their accomplishment, stating, “I am incredibly proud to witness this historic achievement by Taniksha Khatri and Prachi Lohan. Their qualification for the Main Table of 64 is a landmark moment for Indian fencing, showcasing their exceptional talent and dedication. In the Men's Individual Foil event on Day 1, India's four-member team gained valuable experience against international competitors. Sachin led the team with a 107th place finish, followed by Aditya at 137th, Sanasam Hemash Singh at 143rd, and Tejas Manoj Patil at 149th. Although they did not advance to the individual direct elimination draw, they will regroup for the Men's Foil Team event later in the tournament.

Taniksha Khatri and Prachi Lohan are set to return to the piste on Saturday, July 25, for the Women's Individual Epee Main Table of 64 direct elimination matches, aiming to progress to the Table of 32 and compete for world championship medals.

The action at the Senior World Fencing Championships continues tomorrow, July 23, with two crucial qualification events featuring Indian athletes:

Men's Individual Epee (Qualification): Sherjin Rajendran Shanthimol, Joseph Bennet, Siva Magesh Sathasivan Nirmala, and Shaurya Ashwini will lead India's campaign.

Women's Individual Sabre (Qualification): Representing India will be Shreya Gupta, Jefarlin Jani Rexlin Simla, Shruti Joshi, and Aakhri.
