Record-Breaking Partnership at the Gabba

Brisbane [Australia], December 4: Joe Root and Jofra Archer made headlines as they established a new record for the highest 10th wicket partnership in a day-night Test match.

This remarkable achievement occurred on the first day of the second Ashes Test against Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane on Thursday.

The duo's unbeaten partnership of 61 runs for the 10th wicket eclipsed the previous record of 59 runs set by New Zealand's Tom Blundell and Blair Tickner against England in Mount Maunganui earlier this year.

In the match, England won the toss and chose to bat first. After Mitchell Starc's impressive bowling reduced England to a precarious 5/2, dismissing both Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope without scoring, Root formed a crucial 117-run partnership with Zak Crawley, who scored 76 runs off 93 balls, including 11 fours. Another significant partnership followed with Harry Brook, who contributed 31 runs off 33 balls, hitting four boundaries.

Australia made significant progress in the match, highlighted by a brilliant run-out from Josh Inglis that dismissed England's captain Ben Stokes for 19 runs, leaving England at 264/9. Starc achieved his sixth five-wicket haul in pink-ball Tests during this innings.

Joe Root celebrated his first Test century on Australian soil, reaching the milestone in 181 balls. It took him 30 innings to achieve this feat in Australia.

Root became the second English player, following Maurice Leyland, to score a century on the opening day of a Test at the Gabba, making him the eighth player overall to achieve this for England at this venue.

At the close of play on day one, Root was unbeaten on 135, while Jofra Archer contributed 32 runs off 26 balls, including a four and two sixes, helping England to a total of 325/9 after 74 overs.

Brief Scores: England 196/4 (Zak Crawley 76, Joe Root 135*, Mitchell Starc 6/71) vs Australia.
