Harsh Singh's Remarkable Victory in Glasgow

Glasgow [Scotland], July 31: Indian judoka Harsh Singh expressed immense joy after securing the gold medal in the men’s 60kg category at the Commonwealth Games 2026, dedicating his victory to his mother.

Harsh triumphed over Australia’s Joshua Katz with a decisive Waza-Ari (10-0) in the final match. This victory marked India’s second gold medal in judo at the Games, following Asmita Dey’s earlier win in the women’s 48kg category.

In an interview, Harsh shared his happiness about winning for India, stating, “I am really thrilled to bring this medal home. We had trained hard for this moment. I dedicate this achievement to my mother. If I qualify, I will prepare diligently for the Asian Games and aim for another medal.”

Katz started the final with an aggressive approach, attempting to gain an early lead, but Harsh’s solid defense thwarted any scoring chances for the Australian. The initial exchanges saw both athletes attacking, yet neither could establish a clear advantage.

At one point, Katz nearly pinned Harsh, but the Indian judoka managed to escape and counterattack. Despite the intense exchanges, the scoreboard remained unchanged for a significant portion of the match.

However, at the 3:19 mark, Harsh executed a perfectly timed throw, pinning Katz and earning a Waza-Ari, which ultimately secured his victory and the Commonwealth Games title.

This win brought India its second judo gold at the Commonwealth Games 2026 and contributed to the country’s overall medal tally of five golds, nine silvers, and five bronzes in Glasgow.

India's gold medalists include Mirabai Chanu (women’s 48kg weightlifting), Sharmila Dhankar (women’s shot put F57), Dilip Gavit (men’s 100m T47), Asmita Dey (women’s 48kg judo), and Harsh Singh (men’s 60kg judo). The silver medals were won by Rishikanta Singh, Muthupandi Raja, Gyaneshwari Yadav, Sarvesh Kushare, Valluri Ajaya Babu, Harjinder Kaur, Gulveer Singh, Murali Sreeshankar, Mohammed Basil, and Lovepreet Singh, while bronze medals were claimed by Jhandu Kumar, Bindyarani Devi, Shilpa K Shyla, and Seema Kaliramna.
