Kane's Performance Highlights England's Comeback

Atlanta [US], July 2: England's captain, Harry Kane, attributed his impressive World Cup performance to the high standards set by football legends Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Following a crucial 2-1 victory over Congo DR in the Round of 32, Kane emphasized that the extensive hours dedicated to recovery, training, and preparation were vital in helping him shine when it mattered most.

In the second half, Kane netted two goals, rescuing England from a potential early exit. He remarked on the importance of maintaining elite performance levels, which often requires dedication beyond the public eye.

“The unseen work we put in during training, recovery sessions, and treatments is essential for sustaining peak performance,” Kane explained to reporters after the match, as noted by a sports media outlet.

He continued, “Players like Messi and Ronaldo exemplify this commitment. I feel fit and ready, and I trust that my behind-the-scenes efforts prepare me for significant moments, which was evident today.”

Initially, England faced a daunting challenge when Brian Cipenga scored for Congo DR just seven minutes into the match. The African team held their lead into halftime, frustrating England despite their dominance in possession.

Manager Thomas Tuchel made strategic substitutions, bringing on Anthony Gordon and Bukayo Saka, followed by Eberechi Eze, which shifted the momentum in England's favor. Gordon played a pivotal role, assisting both of Kane's goals.

Kane equalized in the 75th minute with a composed finish and then secured the win with another goal in the 86th minute, setting up a Round of 16 clash with co-hosts Mexico.

This performance also elevated Kane in the World Cup scoring rankings, tying him with Just Fontaine at 13 goals, placing him sixth on the all-time list. He became the first English player to score five or more goals in two separate World Cups and is now just one goal shy of Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe in the race for this year's Golden Boot.

Additionally, this victory marked England's first World Cup win after trailing at halftime and only the second time they have come back to win a knockout match after conceding first, the previous instance being the 1966 final against West Germany.

England also extended their unbeaten streak against African teams in World Cup matches to 10, the longest such record by any nation against CAF teams. Furthermore, Gordon made history as the first player since 1966 to provide two assists as a substitute in a World Cup knockout match.
