Team's Focus on Strategy Ahead of World Cup

In Bengaluru, Indian hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh shared insights on the extensive preparations the team has undertaken for both offensive and defensive strategies as they gear up for the FIH Men's Hockey World Cup, scheduled from August 14 to 30 in Belgium and the Netherlands. He emphasized the importance of enhancing communication and refining penalty corner tactics.

India secured its spot in the tournament by clinching victory at the men's Asia Cup last year, held on home turf.

During an interview, Harmanpreet highlighted the rigorous training sessions conducted in Bengaluru, focusing on improving their game in the opponent's circle and capitalizing on 50-50 chances.

"Our preparations are progressing excellently. The time spent in camp has allowed us to work on various aspects, including fitness and tactical structure. We've concentrated on individual skills, particularly in attack and defense, and how to handle opportunities in the opponent's circle. As a team, we have placed significant emphasis on our defensive strategies," Harmanpreet stated.

Having taken a break before the tournament, he expressed satisfaction with the rise of young talent since his absence during the Hobart leg of the FIH Pro League in February 2026. He feels rejuvenated and ready for the World Cup.

"The Pro League offers a great platform for young players. Competing against the same team twice allows for thorough analysis. The youngsters are performing admirably, and we, as senior players, engage openly with them to boost their confidence. Effective communication is crucial to avoid any gaps," he remarked.

Harmanpreet also mentioned that while being away from the team was challenging, it was necessary for recovery. He expressed contentment with their Pro League performance, finishing eighth, and is optimistic about their upcoming World Cup journey.

On his personal development, he noted the importance of clear communication with teammates regarding positioning during matches.

"I've concentrated on maintaining effective communication, especially when off the ball. My role allows me to be a free player, so clear and positive communication is vital for our success," he explained.

He added, "We've also focused on penalty corner strategies, working on aggressive positioning and determining the best locations to be in the opponent's half. Understanding whether to position ourselves on the left or right side is crucial for team benefit. We've covered a lot of ground in our training, and now it's time to implement these strategies in the World Cup."

India is placed in Pool D alongside England, Wales, and their long-time rivals, Pakistan. The last time India tasted World Cup victory was in 1975, defeating Pakistan 2-1 in the final, and they have been striving for that glory for the past 50 years.

After finishing ninth in the 2023 edition held in Bhubaneswar, India aims to secure the gold medal, buoyed by their recent successes, including two consecutive Olympic bronze medals, an Asia Cup title, and two Asian Champions Trophy victories.
