Harmanpreet Kaur Responds to Retirement Speculations Ahead of Women's T20 World Cup

Harmanpreet Kaur, captain of the Indian women's cricket team, humorously addressed questions about her potential retirement ahead of the 2026 Women's T20 World Cup. As she prepares to lead her team in England, Kaur aims to make history by becoming the first Indian captain to win this prestigious tournament. Having already secured the 2025 Women's World Cup, she reflects on her journey and the significance of this upcoming event, where India hopes to build on past successes.

Harmanpreet Kaur's Reaction to World Cup Questions

Harmanpreet Kaur expressed her displeasure when asked if the upcoming 2026 Women's T20 World Cup would mark her final appearance for the Indian team. The captain, who led India to victory in the 2025 Women's World Cup, is set to guide the Women in Blue during the tournament's 10th edition, scheduled in England from June 12 to July 5. During a press conference in London on June 7, a reporter inquired whether this tournament would be her last. Harmanpreet, visibly taken aback, humorously questioned the intent behind the question, saying, 'Why? Do you think I should stop? Then why are you asking?' This response elicited laughter from those present and quickly circulated on social media.

Harmanpreet Kaur Aiming for Historic Win

Having led India to its first ICC trophy victory last year and clinching the 2025 Women's World Cup, Harmanpreet has the opportunity to become the first Indian captain to secure the Women's T20 World Cup title. Under her leadership, India reached the final of this competition in 2020, where they faced Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in front of a record audience. Notably, Harmanpreet is the only Indian player to have participated in all 10 editions of the tournament, which began in 2009. The inaugural edition was also hosted in England, where she made her T20I debut under the captaincy of Jhulan Goswami. This marks Harmanpreet's fifth time leading India in a Women's T20 World Cup, following her previous stints in 2018, 2020, 2023, and 2024. Except for the last tournament held in the UAE, the Women in Blue have reached the semi-finals in each of the preceding three editions.
