Hardik Pandya Defends Captaincy Decisions After MI's Victory Over GT
Mumbai Indians Break Losing Streak
Hardik Pandya responded to critics regarding his captaincy choices, particularly concerning Jasprit Bumrah's role, after the Mumbai Indians (MI) secured a 99-run win against the Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. This victory marked MI's first win against Hardik's former team away from home, ending a four-match losing streak and elevating them to 7th place in the standings after starting the match at the bottom.
In a notable change, Bumrah opened the bowling for the first time this season, making an immediate impact by dismissing Sai Sudharsan for a golden duck. This wicket marked Bumrah's first of the season, having gone without a wicket in his previous five matches, which was the longest dry spell of his IPL career. The discussion around Bumrah's bowling position reignited, as many experts have previously criticized Hardik for using him as a first-change bowler instead of at the start or during crucial overs.
Defending his strategy, Hardik stated, "It's interesting to see people question why Jasprit has not bowled the first over. In 151 matches, he has only bowled the first over eight or nine times. This isn't a Hardik Pandya issue; it's about utilizing Jasprit's unique skills where they are most needed. Today, we wanted to make a strong impact with the new ball, and he was the best choice for that."
Bumrah's Historic Achievement
Is Hardik Pandya's Claim Valid?
Hardik's assertion holds true, as the match against GT was only the seventh time Bumrah has bowled the first over in his 151-match career since debuting in 2013. He had previously opened the bowling in the 2014 season twice, three times in 2018, and once in 2022. Notably, in the last four years, MI had not started an innings with Bumrah.
With the dismissal of Sudharsan, Bumrah achieved a significant milestone, marking his 184th wicket in IPL history, surpassing Dwayne Bravo's record of 183. He now stands as the pacer with the second-most wickets in IPL history, trailing only Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who has 208. Additionally, Bumrah holds the record for the most wickets by a pacer for a single team in the league's history, with only Sunil Narine (198 for KKR) having more for a single franchise.
