Chhattisgarh's Gyaneshwari Yadav Wins Silver Medal

Raipur (Chhattisgarh) [India], July 28: Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Vishnu Deo Sai, extended his heartfelt congratulations to Indian weightlifter Gyaneshwari Yadav for securing a silver medal in the women's 53kg category at the 2026 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow.

During a press briefing, Sai commended Gyaneshwari for her outstanding performance, emphasizing that she has brought honor to Chhattisgarh with her remarkable achievement.

“Congratulations to Gyaneshwari Yadav… She has elevated the pride of Chhattisgarh by winning a silver medal. I hope she continues to achieve even greater success,” the Chief Minister remarked.

The 23-year-old athlete from Chhattisgarh exhibited exceptional focus and determination throughout the competition, pushing her limits and setting multiple records at the Games, as reported by ESPN.

Gyaneshwari kicked off her competition with an impressive 82kg lift in the snatch, followed by a successful 85kg on her second attempt. She then achieved a remarkable 88kg lift, breaking the Commonwealth Games record in her category and putting pressure on her competitor, Didih.

In response, the Nigerian lifter executed a record-breaking 93kg snatch, taking the lead as they moved into the clean and jerk segment. The battle for gold intensified as both athletes displayed incredible strength and skill.

Gyaneshwari began the clean and jerk with a strong 103kg lift, bringing her total to 191kg and setting another Games record. She then followed up with a 107kg lift, further improving her record and closing the gap to Didih.

With the gold medal within reach, Gyaneshwari attempted a final lift of 111kg, which she successfully completed, finishing with a total of 199kg. This lift not only earned her another Games and Commonwealth record but also showcased her incredible talent. However, Didih countered with a stunning 113kg lift, securing the gold medal for Nigeria with a total of 206kg.

Although Gyaneshwari did not clinch the top position, her silver medal represents a significant achievement in her career. Previously competing in the 49kg category, she moved up to 53kg, acknowledging the challenge of facing India's Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu in the lower weight class.
