Gus Atkinson Faces Concussion Setback Ahead of New Zealand Test
Gus Atkinson's Injury Raises Concerns for England's Upcoming Test
During a County Championship Division One match against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge, England bowler Gus Atkinson was struck on the head twice, leading to a failed concussion test. Despite being hit by deliveries from his teammate Josh Tongue, Atkinson opted to continue playing initially. However, he ultimately retired from the match, with Reece Topley stepping in as a concussion substitute.
Atkinson's injury poses a significant challenge for the England team, which is set to announce its squad for the first Test against New Zealand shortly. After scoring 449 runs, Surrey held a 34-run lead over Nottinghamshire. Topley managed to score 12 runs off nine balls before being dismissed by Liam Patterson-White.
Surrey's head coach, Gareth Batty, confirmed that Atkinson had passed the on-field concussion assessments but decided to retire as a precaution. Batty stated, "Gus passed the tests on the field, otherwise he would not have been able to stay out there. He felt like he was OK, but duty of care comes into it. I don't know the ins and outs of what exactly happened, but it clearly came to a point where he had to come off. He's OK in himself."
Atkinson was anticipated to lead England's pace attack alongside Tongue in the first Test at Lord’s, commencing on June 4. With Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse unavailable, Ollie Robinson is likely to make a return. Other pace options include Sonny Baker from Hampshire and Essex's Sam Cook, who played in a Test against Zimbabwe last year. Additionally, Atkinson's injury coincided with teammate Ollie Pope reportedly dropping to No. 10 in the batting order due to a hand injury.
