Gurindervir Singh's Commonwealth Games Journey Cut Short by Injury
Gurindervir Singh's Performance at the Commonwealth Games
Gurindervir Singh, a 25-year-old sprinter from Punjab, narrowly missed qualifying for the semi-finals at the Commonwealth Games, finishing with a time of 10.39 seconds. Just two months prior, he had set a record as the fastest Indian, achieving a remarkable 10.09 seconds at the Federation Cup in Ranchi, which raised expectations for his performance at the Games.
Reflecting on the disappointing outcome, his initial coach, Sarabjit Singh Happy, revealed that Gurindervir had sustained a minor hamstring injury about a month before the competition. This injury hindered his ability to participate in events leading up to the Games.
Sarabjit explained, "He had to prioritize his recovery for the Commonwealth Games, which meant he missed other competitions. Following his personal best in Ranchi, he lacked competitive experience before this event, likely impacting his performance."
He noted that Gurindervir performed well up to the 60-meter mark but lost speed thereafter. "If he had matched his personal best of 10.09 seconds, he would have advanced to the semi-finals," he added.
Despite this setback, Sarabjit remains optimistic about Gurindervir's future. "There are significant competitions on the horizon, and I believe he will return even stronger," he stated.
Gurindervir's father, Kamaljit Singh, shared similar sentiments, encouraging his son to stay positive. "I advised him not to dwell on this moment. This phase will pass. Concentrate on the next tournament and give it your all."
