Gurindervir Singh Breaks Men's 60m National Record at Indoor Championships
Record-Breaking Performance in Bhubaneswar
Bhubaneswar (Odisha) [India], March 26: In a remarkable display of speed, Gurindervir Singh shattered the men's 60m national record during the National Indoor Athletics Championships 2026 held at Kalinga Stadium on Wednesday.
The 26-year-old sprinter from Punjab clocked an impressive 6.60 seconds in the final, surpassing the previous national record of 6.67 seconds set by Elakkiyadasan Kanadasan in 2018. This achievement is pending ratification by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), as reported by a sports news outlet.
In a thrilling race, Lalu Prasad Bhoi also finished under the old record, securing second place with a time of 6.65 seconds, while Nuzrat took home the bronze medal with a time of 6.71 seconds.
The event was marked by tension, featuring three false starts, with the last one resulting in the disqualification of Animesh Kujur, the national record holder for both the 100m and 200m events.
Gurindervir, who previously set the national 100m record at 10.20 seconds in 2025, continues to establish himself as one of India's premier sprinters, showcasing his prowess in short-distance events.
In the women's 60m dash, Maharashtra's 22-year-old Harita Bhandra emerged victorious with a time of 7.32 seconds.
Another highlight of the championships was Saloni Nagar Kumari's performance in the women's 400m, where she clocked 53.73 seconds, breaking a long-standing indoor record of 53.89 seconds set by Pinki Pramanik in 2005.
In field events, Swadhin Kumar Majhi secured the men's high jump gold with a clearance of 2.18m, narrowly beating Asian Championships silver medallist Sarvesh Anil Kushare, who cleared 2.15m. Dhairyshil Dhanaji Gayakwad finished third based on countback.
Reegan G made a notable entrance in his indoor debut, achieving a height of 5.30m in the men's pole vault, marking the best performance by an Indian in an indoor event. He later attempted to break the national record with a 5.41m jump but was unsuccessful.
The second day of the championships showcased a variety of sprint, middle-distance, and field events, with numerous athletes delivering impressive performances and emerging talents making their presence felt on the national stage.
