New Delhi [India] - Indian sprinter Gurindervir Singh has expressed his long-term goal of breaking the 10-second barrier in the 100m sprint, while also aiming for medals at both the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games.
Recently, Gurindervir made history by becoming the first Indian male athlete to finish the 100m in under 10.10 seconds, achieving a remarkable national record of 10.09 seconds at the Federation Cup held in Ranchi this past May.
The 24-year-old athlete improved the previous national record by 0.06 seconds, which had been set just a day earlier in the semifinals by Animesh Kujur, according to reports from ESPN.
During an interview at the inaugural Indian Athletics Awards ceremony, Gurindervir emphasized that despite the heightened expectations following his record-setting performance, he remains focused on his personal goals.
“Since childhood, I have aimed to run under 10 seconds. Additionally, I aspire to win medals at the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games,” he stated.
He also mentioned that his training regimen has not changed, highlighting that every competition is significant to him.
“I treat every event with equal importance. For me, the Federation Cup was as crucial as the Commonwealth Games. I gave my all there and will do the same in the Commonwealth Games,” he remarked.
While acknowledging the importance of major competitions like the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, Gurindervir expressed his intention to enjoy the experience rather than succumb to pressure regarding selection.
“In the past, I felt a lot of pressure about being selected. Now, I plan to participate and enjoy every moment,” he added.
Reaffirming his competitive spirit, Gurindervir stated that achieving podium finishes is his primary objective.
“Winning a medal is my ultimate goal, particularly at the Commonwealth and Asian Games,” he concluded.
