Gulveer Singh's Impressive Performance

New Delhi, September 26: Gulveer Singh clinched a silver medal in the men's 10,000m event at the Asian Games held in Aichi-Nagoya on Friday, finishing with a time of 28:29.38. He trailed behind Bahrain's Birhanu Balew, who took home the gold with a time of 28:27.51.

Throughout the race, Gulveer maintained his position within the leading pack, strategically waiting until the final stages to make his move. This achievement adds to his collection of medals, as he previously secured a bronze in the same event at the 2023 Hangzhou Games.

Expressing his joy, Gulveer stated, “Winning a silver medal for India at the Asian Games is a wonderful feeling. Standing on the podium at such a prestigious event is truly rewarding. Our preparation focused on executing a championship race rather than just aiming for a specific time, and I adhered to our race strategy. This medal is a great motivation, but I recognize that there are many more challenges ahead.”

Reflecting on his race strategy, he emphasized the importance of remaining calm and not getting caught up in a time trial. “Championship races differ significantly from those where time is the primary goal. The objective was to stay composed, stick with the lead group, and time my move perfectly. I trusted the plan my coach and I devised, remained patient, and fortunately, it paid off,” he remarked.

Gulveer continues to focus on incremental improvements, supported by the Athletics Federation of India and the Inspire Institute of Sport. “My goal each year is to enhance my performance bit by bit. I don’t dwell on results too much, as they come from solid preparation. While winning a medal is gratifying, my priority is ongoing progress. I am grateful for the backing of the Athletics Federation of India and the Inspire Institute of Sport, which provides an environment conducive to training and recovery. My coaches assist me in refining the small details that can make a significant impact. I will persist in this approach and strive for further improvement,” he added.

He also acknowledged the crucial role of his support team in preparing for high-level competitions. “At this level, it’s often the minor aspects that lead to the most significant outcomes. Having the right support, including coaches, physiotherapists, strength and conditioning specialists, and recovery personnel, allows me to concentrate entirely on my training. When these details are consistently managed, it enhances my performance on race day,” he concluded.

Gulveer's silver medal contributes to India's growing success in athletics as the competition at the Asian Games continues.
