Gulveer Singh Shines at Asian Games 2026

Aichi-Nagoya [Japan], September 25: Indian long-distance runner Gulveer Singh achieved a remarkable feat by winning the silver medal in the men's 10,000m race during the Asian Games 2026, held at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium on Friday.

The 28-year-old athlete finished with a time of 28:29.38, securing second place behind Bahrain's Birhanu Balew, who clinched gold with a time of 28:27.51 after a powerful late surge. Albert Kiptoo, also from Bahrain, took home the bronze medal, clocking in at 28:34.38, as reported by ESPN.

Gulveer, who serves as a Naib Subedar in the Indian Army, maintained his position among the leaders for most of the race and remained competitive until the final moments. Although Balew pulled ahead in the last stretch, Gulveer comfortably secured the silver medal.

This achievement marks a significant improvement for Gulveer, who previously earned a bronze medal in the same event at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou.

In recent years, Gulveer has demonstrated exceptional form, winning gold in both the 5,000m and 10,000m events at the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, South Korea.

At the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, he made history as the first Indian to win two medals in track events at a single edition, taking silver in the 10,000m and bronze in the 5,000m.

Earlier this year, he also secured a bronze medal in the men's 5,000m at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships in Bangkok.

In other events, India's Pooja finished sixth in the women's heptathlon 800m with a time of 2:16.43, while Anamika Aneesh placed eighth.

India celebrated two additional athletics medals on Friday, with Manpreet Kaur winning bronze in the women's shot put with a best throw of 17.17m. Krishna Jayasankar Menon finished fifth with a throw of 16.57m.

As of now, India has accumulated a total of 22 medals at the Asian Games, including two gold, nine silver, and eleven bronze, placing them 12th in the overall standings.
