Gujarat's Young Skaters Excel in National Championships

A 23-member team of talented skaters from Gujarat has made a remarkable return from the 21st National Ice Skating Championships, which took place in Dehradun from June 25 to June 30, 2026. The squad brought home an impressive haul of six medals, including two golds, one silver, and three bronzes, securing a commendable seventh place in the national rankings for short track speed skating.

Leading the charge was Yuvraj Mehta, who claimed the title of double national champion by winning gold in both the 333m and 222m events in the Junior F Boys category. Kavya Patel also shone brightly, earning one silver and two bronze medals in the Junior C Girls category, while Mahi Solanki contributed a bronze in the same category, as reported in a recent release.

Beyond the medals, the squad achieved a significant milestone by recording 48 personal best times over the six-day competition, averaging more than two personal bests per skater, with many athletes competing at a national level for the first time.

As a result of their outstanding performances, these skaters have been invited to participate in the Indian team selection trials for the upcoming Asian Trophy, set to take place in August. The team will take a brief recovery period before resuming their training in preparation for these trials.

The athletes are guided by an international mentorship program led by Vishwaraj Jadeja, a distinguished 65-time Indian national record holder and international medallist in ice speed skating.

“While six medals are a great achievement, I am equally thrilled about the 48 personal bests. This indicates that the depth of our squad is improving, which is essential for keeping Gujarat competitive in the future. I also want to commend Amitabh Sharma, President of the Ice Skating Association of India, for his unwavering support and vision, which are crucial for strengthening the sport and providing more opportunities for young skaters nationwide. Our focus now shifts to the Indian team selection trials,” stated Vishwaraj Jadeja.
