Maxwell's Remarkable Achievement in T20 Cricket

In Oakland, USA, on June 18, Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell made headlines by tying with notable players such as David Warner, Aaron Finch, Indian cricket star Rohit Sharma, and England's Jos Buttler, as he reached the milestone of joint-fourth-highest centuries in T20 cricket history.


Maxwell accomplished this remarkable feat during a Major League Cricket (MLC) match while playing for Washington Freedom against the Los Angeles Knight Riders. He scored his eighth century in the T20 format, showcasing his prowess as he hit an impressive unbeaten 106 off just 49 deliveries, featuring only two fours but an astonishing 13 sixes, achieving a strike rate of 216.33. This season, he is leading the team in the absence of Steve Smith, who guided them to victory last year.


Alongside Maxwell, Warner, Finch, Rohit, Buttler, and Michael Klinger from Australia have all recorded eight T20 centuries. The record for the most centuries in this format is held by West Indies legend Chris Gayle, who has an astounding 22 centuries in 463 matches. Following him are Pakistan's Babar Azam with 11 centuries, and both Rilee Rossouw from South Africa and Indian great Virat Kohli, each with nine.


In the match, Washington Freedom chose to bat first after winning the toss. Mitchell Owen's explosive 32 runs off 11 balls, which included four boundaries and two sixes, was a highlight as the team found themselves struggling at 68/4. However, Maxwell's exceptional performance turned the game around, as he scored 26 runs off Jason Holder in the final over, alongside Obus Pienaar (14*), to elevate his team to a total of 208/5.


Throughout the MLC 2025 season, Maxwell has accumulated 149 runs in three innings, boasting an impressive average of 149.00 and a strike rate exceeding 204, with previous scores of 38* and 5. He currently ranks as the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament, with his team achieving one win and one loss under his captaincy.
