Maxwell Prepares for T20 World Cup Challenges

As Australia gears up for the ICC T20 World Cup set to take place in India and Sri Lanka next year, all-rounder Glenn Maxwell shared insights about the unique conditions of sub-continent pitches. He emphasized that spinners might find more assistance from the dry surfaces and hard seams, stating, “You might be able to get a little bit more out of it.”

Maxwell addressed the media in Cairns prior to the third T20I against South Africa, where the series stands at 1-1. He noted, “In the sub-continent, you might be able to get a little bit more out of it as a spinner early on, especially with the new ball gripping on those dry surfaces.”

Reflecting on his experience, Maxwell recalled his memorable performance during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup final in 2023, where he took the crucial wicket of Rohit Sharma, contributing to Australia’s sixth World Cup victory.

In the current T20I series against South Africa, Maxwell has bowled two overs during the Powerplay, making a significant impact by taking two important wickets, including that of South African captain Aiden Markram.

“I am just as surprised as anyone when I get a wicket. I love getting wickets,” he remarked, as he approaches the milestone of 50 T20I wickets.

Despite some inconsistency in his batting, Maxwell has claimed three wickets in the series, with a total of 10 wickets in his last 10 T20 matches.

“It is very surprising anytime I get anyone out. I am there to do a job in the Powerplay and I’m trying to execute that as well as I can,” he added.

In his recent T20 outings, Maxwell has scored 124 runs across nine innings, with a top score of 47 and only two innings exceeding 20 runs.

Maxwell also discussed his fluctuating batting position, having batted at number five in the second T20I after opening in the first match. This follows his role as an opener in four of the five T20Is against the West Indies.

“I have been a bit of a shuffler around the order, up and down. I’m filling holes at the moment,” he explained.

“Even during the West Indies series, I was trying to combat Akeal Hosein by going up the top, and in this series, I’m going a little bit lower to manage the back end of the innings.”

“I’m trying to play whatever role is needed for me on this side and just try and be as adaptable as possible,” he concluded.
