Germany's Shocking World Cup Exit Prompts Review by Football Federation
Germany's World Cup Disappointment
Boston [USA], June 30 (News Media): Bernd Neuendorf, the President of the German Football Association, announced that a comprehensive evaluation will be conducted to determine the reasons behind Germany's unexpected exit from the FIFA World Cup 2026. This follows the team's failure to meet the high expectations of fans and analysts alike, as reported by various sources.
The four-time World Cup champions faced a historic elimination in the Round of 32, losing to Paraguay in a penalty shootout. The match ended 1-1 after extra time, and Germany believed they had secured a spot in the Round of 16 when Jonathan Tah scored in the 101st minute. However, a VAR review led to the disallowance of the goal due to an infringement by defender Waldemar Anton on Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gill.
In the ensuing penalty shootout, Paraguay triumphed 5-3, marking another disappointing chapter for Germany following their 2014 World Cup victory.
Following this setback, Neuendorf emphasized the need for a thorough analysis of the team's performance, stating that such a disappointing outcome cannot simply lead to a return to previous routines. He highlighted the necessity for changes as they move forward.
“In the coming days, we will carefully assess why the team could not fulfill its potential and failed to meet the expectations of both itself and the German football community,” Neuendorf remarked. “After such a devastating defeat, we cannot and will not just revert to business as usual as we prepare for future challenges,” he added.
Since taking the helm of the DFB in 2022, Neuendorf has witnessed two consecutive early exits from the World Cup, along with Germany's quarter-final elimination at Euro 2024 held on home soil.
