France's Journey to the Knockout Stage

As France gears up for their round of 32 clash against Sweden in the FIFA World Cup, coach Didier Deschamps emphasized the importance of ignoring external pressures regarding their status as favorites. He highlighted the need for his team to maintain composure, especially since there are 'no second chances' in knockout matches.

France has impressively secured victories in all three of their group stage matches, accumulating 9 points for the first time since their triumphant 1998 World Cup campaign. With a formidable attack spearheaded by captain Kylian Mbappe and 2025 Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembele, the two-time champions are poised to claim a third star on their jersey.

Deschamps remarked, 'Even before the tournament began, we were considered among the favorites. Our performance in the group stage has not altered that perception. Our focus is on maintaining confidence as we enter this new phase. Although we achieved nine points, it does not grant us any additional advantage,' as reported by FIFA.

Midfielder Adrien Rabiot acknowledged that while the team is aware of the discussions surrounding them, they strive to remain concentrated and 'block out the noise.' He noted, 'We've managed to do this effectively so far, as we could have easily become complacent. For instance, during our match against Iraq (3-0), many believed there would be a significant disparity between the teams, which was not the case. We have diligently prepared for each match and treated them with the seriousness they deserve.'

Deschamps, who has led France since 2012, brings a wealth of experience, having won the 2018 FIFA World Cup and finishing as runners-up four years later, along with securing a UEFA Nations League bronze. However, he also faced disappointment when the team was eliminated in the round of 16 during Euro 2020 after a penalty shootout loss.

Rabiot, who participated in that Euro match, described the experience as 'valuable' and stressed the importance of sharing such lessons with the rest of the squad. He stated, 'Those experiences are crucial, and it's essential for those who were involved to communicate them to the group.'

Reflecting on the Switzerland match, Rabiot emphasized the need for vigilance, saying, 'As that game illustrated, staying alert is vital. We take every match extremely seriously and cannot afford to let our guard down. While I’m not suggesting complacency was the sole issue against Switzerland, there were moments where we may have relaxed, and we ultimately faced the consequences.'

The knockout stages are familiar ground for Deschamps and his team, marking their 19th match in this format since he took over in 2012, a record unmatched by any other European nation during this timeframe.

Deschamps concluded by stating, 'There are no second chances, but that doesn't mean we should play with anxiety or hold back. It's part of the game, and the players are here to compete and win, fully aware that there are no safety nets. Unlike club competitions, where qualification phases offer some leeway, here there is none. This requires a different mindset, but this is what we came for, and now it's time to go out and secure a victory.'
